Let's have a films thread.

Bond films are action/thrillers. The end.

I'm all for loosely defined genres but having some fictional technology in your film doesn't make it a sci fi.

Genres are defined by form and convention, not by gadgets. Early Bond films are staples of the spy thriller world and the latest works have been straight up action blockbusters.

No debate here.

Has anyone been to a cinema and there's been a round of applause at the ending? I remember my sister telling me when she went to see The Return Of The King there was full applause, also when i went to see Toy Story 3 in a packed cinema full applause broke out. I also can remember there was a big around of applause before Chamber Of Secrets began, once the title came up everybody decided to cheer and applaud.

Also another question when you were younger which film gave you nightmares for weeks?

happens in america a lot, but not just at the end.....

If something isn't actually real at the moment it's either fantasy or if based on science Sci-Fi.

Thankfully your arguments just go to show that you do watch Fantasy/Sci fi without any problems. You pigeon hole it as Sci-fi and you don't want to watch/don't like - you tell yourself that it's not sci-fi and you enjoy it.

As I said most fantasy/sci-fi films are a mix of genres just the same as many detective/period/comedy etc... films are.

Perhaps stop generically classing a film in order to like or not like it and you'll enjoy more films.

I particularly laughed when bond films were classed as action/adventure. Most films made ARE action/adventure.

Open your minds and don't follow classifications that you are told exist.

Sci-Fi and Fantasy? Not much difference eh?

As I said most films are a cross of genres. There are many films that are scifi/fantasy/action/adventure/period/detective/comedy ....

Don't be so narrow minded.

No.

There are many films that have elements of a lot of genres. That doesn't make them part of that genre. You've got to look at the basic plot and key themes.

Some films are a cross of a couple of genres, but not seven.

I don't believe I classed Bond films as action/adventure. I classed them as spy/action thrillers.

In your opinion, just as mine is in my opinion. Still I'm sure you aren't one of the people who refuse to watch a film because it is classed as a particular type of film so my comments in general are not aimed at you.

In your opinion is Skyfall - james bond in the same same category as Moonraker - James bond. and if James bond movies are Spy/action/thrillers would you put tinker, tailor soldier spy in the same category?

btw I'd put several bond movies in the comedy section.

Fif in being wrong about something shocker.

The only people who can't tell between genres, in movies, music, art or whatever, are people who don't know what they are talking about.

Wondered how long it would be before the racist/sexist/moron/... (definitely multi-category)Moosey chimed in with a useless FIF comment.

Right, so there's only two genres of film.

Documentaries and fantasy. Awesome.

Quite the contrary there are very few films that fit into one category. Most films like most people are a mixture of a large variety of categories and therefore anyone saying I won't watch this movie becuase it's Sci-Fi is a bit of a dummy.

If the Sci-Fi elements are what you're taking and enjoying from the Bond franchise then fair enough (though you've got slim pickings on the latest ones). Personally I steer clear of Sci-Fi films because they don't interest me for numerous reasons. I watch Bond films for the espionage elements and the escapism.

You're taking the names of genres literally. A fundamental mistake. Genres are not necessarily descriptions. You're plain wrong, I'm afraid, and not for the first time.

I'm glad you agree that "bond films" differ. Despite enjoying scifi related films immensely I tend to dislike the Bond movies that are more sci-fi related. I much prefer the recent bond films. I judge a film on personal taste rather than a pre-ordained category.

And you have missed the point of a discussion (and not for the first or last time). Do you ever actually use your brain to think about things or do you just let the ideas of others whoosh clearly over you head worried that you may have to re-evaluate your racist, misoginisticpetty little life?

I can't believe this all started from me saying I wasn't a fan of Sci-Fi and Horror and another post saying I purchased Skyfall yesterday.

lol

Bloody troublemaker. but nice paraphrase of what you really said.

I tend to stay away from certain types of "horror" movies that I enjoyed as a teenager these days as after experiencing more life certain storylines disturb/revolt/upset me.

Yeh Im not against Sci-Fi films, there's a couple I really want to watch, like I said in the other film I think Alien (which is surely a sci-fi/horror?) is a great film. There are certain specific plots in a lot of sci-fi films that wouldn't interest me though.

There is definitely some humour in bond but some of it is only so hilarious because it's so dated (I'm not sure if that's what you're hinting at?). None of them are comedies though, the main theme and idea of them is not to make you laugh, that's just an extra.

Skyfall is absolutely brilliant, just finished watching it.

Daniel Craig is by far my favourite James Bond, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall have been all on the money.

As much as I enjoyed Skyfall, I was struck by how many plot devices and themes had been lifted from the last three Batman films.

The death/disappearance/resurrection of the main character.

The villain whose plan is to get caught.

The ancestral home gets burned down.

The well known franchise character's mystery identity revealed at the end.

There are probably a few more...

Jurassic Park, Inception, A Scanner Darkly, Cube, Donnie Darko, Total Recall (the Arnold one, haven't seen the remake so can't comment), Brasil, Equilibrium to name a few. Some are more obviously Sci-Fi than others, all are indisputably classic films.

Don't get me wrong I don't dislike the genre totally, it's just not one I'm never really drawn to. I've got Moon, 2001, Blade Runner, Brazil etc in my DVD collection, I appreciate Sci-Fi when it's grounded more in reality than when it verges into the fantastical.

And you think Brazil's an example of that? With Robert Deniro the superman plumber and all the other freaky shit?! lol
