Let's have a films thread.

Got to hand it to Spring Breakers, it was much more respectable than I had expected. Not the most refined movie you'll ever see, and in parts was verging on farce, but it was quite stylish with a bit of a psychedelic and surreal vibe going on. A genuine 7.2 of which 1.2 is for the shear volume of tits and arse they managed to get into the film.

No I can't. That's one of my main gripes with it.

It's either a Bond film or it's not. I don't enjoy a Bond film that's trying not to be a Bond film. It was trying to appeal more to Harry Potter fans than Bond fans, just look at the kind of jokes (and delivery of said jokes) throughout the film. It's not the Bond humour I've come to know and love. It's too childish.

Were you in suspense worrying that M would die? Personally I more wanted her to die than to live, she's just not a likeable character.

The new Bond was far closer to the Bond portrayed by Fleming in his novels. The stuff with Brosnan and way out gadgets etc, etc, isn't a true reflection of Fleming's character. So in that sense, Skyfall isn't "a Bond film that's trying not to be a Bond film" - it's a proper Bond film.

I actually agree with you in some ways, since the Harry Potter films came out all the films have looked to copy it's dark style, they even cast voldermort as the new M!, by the away i asn't bothered by the death of M anyway but the ending was intense. In some ways it was nice to have a different style of bond, otherwise we'll be going down the same road of the later Prosnan films where they didn't care about the plots and stories. They just wanted to keep every film the same theme, a british spy, that dodged explosions, killed evil leaders that wanted to takeover the world & can also stop his heart for a few minutes.

My only concern with this new style, it came across to me similar to the recent batman films.

Never been a big fan of Bond films maily for the reasons given. There are a few car chases explosions and a one to one fight with the baddie at the end. I would like a different style to the film.

I know somebody who is  a fan of the books and says they are completely different. Bond is nothing like he is in the films.

I personally think Craig does a decent job. For me, he's come closest to what Bond was meant to be.

Well no, because the books are not films, they are books. And I don't know anyone who's read one of them by the way. I don't know why anyone bothers referencing them, it's not the books that are the huge franchise, some people don't even know that it's based on the books.

The majority of fans have fell in love with the style of film. I'm not really bothered if the recent Bonds are more like the books, I don't see how that's relevant to my point.

Besides, I'm not sure how true your judgement on the books is. Goldfinger was one of the novels and the character of Pussy Galore was in that novel. He can't have been expected to have the books taken that seriously with characters like that, not to mention some of the far-out villains used in the novels. The whole premise of the Bond stories is just a bit silly, and I think the classic Bond character from the films fits better.

I don't actually have a problem with Craig as such, he's not my favourite portrayal of Bond but he doesn't do anything badly. It's more the plots and supporting characters I'm not on board with. And yes, the lack of gadgets is also a bit disappointing. There's been some great scenes with some of those. And M being the Bond girl is just wrong.

But the humour has suffered the most, I think. It's no longer adult/dark/based around a lot of innuendo, it's just rather juvenile and cringey. That's got nothing to with them trying to be like the novels, that's just poor writing.

The gadgets in die another day we're stupid, An invisible car! It was time for the gadgets to be cut down a little, Casino Royale didn't need any gadgets if it did then i think it would have lost its intense spy thriller. Quantum probably suffered it the most with lack of gadgets and as i said it was boring. Craig is doing a great job as bond and hope he looks to do a couple more before he hits 50.

While on this Bond subject what do people want to see in Bond 24? With all this character development don't rule out the idea of bond having a brother show up!

Ok ok, that was a little silly :D (Is it not potentially doable though? I was very convinced by Q's explanation! ) But I still enjoyed the film. The action scenes were exciting, the one-liners were well-timed and effective, (from Pierce (as usual) anyway, I'll admit Halle Berry was absolutely atrocious)  and I liked the idea behind the plot, a bit of intruige and surprises, and the blonde was  good Bond girl. I didn't really get that with Skyfall. The plot was very basic and boring, the Bond girl lasted about 10 minutes and there didn't seem to be much danger to civilians in general.

Anyway, I think my issue with the modern Bonds (that being the last two, Casino Royale was great) is the same issue I have with a lot of modern popular films: They're fun films trying to be serious. It's not very convincing and it doesn't appeal to me.

It's like these super hero films that are all the rage now. When did that sort of stuff stop being for kids? They're blokes wearing spandex doing ridiculous things. Their disguises are hardly brilliant yet none of their closest friends and family can recognise them (I mean really, he takes his glasses of and you don't have a clue who he is? Get real). The villains are, let's face it, ludicrously unrealistic. And all that is fine, if you're not being told to try and take it seriously.

I quite like the darker/edgier stuff that's been coming out in the big franchises recently. And the studios know it'll cater to a bigger market too.

That said, I think it is going overboard now as pretty much every blockbuster coming out has the same idea.

Watched the Rock the other night. How stupid is that? Sean Connery's character smashed up half the city. Cars pushed up hundreds of feet in the air landing upside down numourous fires millions of $$$ damage and noone is injured. All they said to him 'You caused a lot of damage' Then they carried on as normal.

It made good viewing if you forgot the absurd storyline.

Just read Hollywood are doing a re-make of the original Highlander movie. As a big fan of the original, this fills my heart with sorrow!

Reports were that Ryan Reynolds was to be the lead but he is now out...phew!

I once watched Scarface and Shrek in a hotel lounge in Amsterdam with a Russian guy who looked incredibly like Viktor Bout, he was off his face drunk and I was off my face high, probably the best double bill of films I've ever seen. You haven't seen Scarface properly until you've had a moustached Russian man shouting quotes in your face in a heavy Russian accent, mere seconds before it's been said on the screen.
