Let's have a films thread.

I really wanted to love the new Bond movie, was willing to enter the theatre without any preconceived ideas.

Instead, the film let me down. The script, the dialogue, the characters - all lifeless and loveless, an amalgamate of all the elements that make a Bond, yet it doesn't work.

From the cringeworthy opening credits, the constant promotion of foreign places and countries (surely the choice was heavily based on the amount of tax returns available), the poor title song, the in-your-face product placement to the suspension of disbelief (all those plot holes, explosions and overly extended fight scenes shot for their own sakes) and the somewhat irritating cameo by Monica Bellucci, it just won't fall into place.

It's as if somebody put all the Bond pieces into a bag, shook it and out came "Spectre".

And the feature is definitely about 30 minutes too long.

At least Christoph Waltz makes for a good villain and opposition, as always. Ralph Fiennes adds some of the much-needed class.

Still - a challenging idea on paper, ambitious to say the least. Poor execution. You expect an early Christmas gift, but are left with nothing but the wrapping. 5/10.

Personally, I can't wait for Craig making way for a more suave Bond. I liked him better in his pre-Bond days (see Layer Cake, for instance).

I thought Ralph did an exceptional good job but I just feel Waltz was okay, I think I am used to seeing his over-extravagant performances (Django, Inglorious Basterds, Water and Elephants). The plot was so poor, any developments were not explained well. I liked fight scenes apart from that wrestler's death, it was nothing special. Skyfall was much much better in every way.

I definitely think it went on too long. I also think the story seemed to lose its way several times and I started to lose interest. Certainly not the best Bond film this decade.

Saved my writing it up, so disappointed after the reviews friends had given. Basically a load of action and not a lot of anything else.

The story was virtually non existent. The relationship between Bond and Waltz was barely even touched upon or explored, despite being a rather major point.

The writing felt lazy and nothing more than a vehicle to have explosions.

I like Craig as Bond, but he's been used badly a couple of times now.

I have found that Bond films have  been that way for a while now. Not a huge fan of them though. Goot if you into explosions vehicle crashes and mass shootings with little storyline. Good escapism is how I see them. I cannot  get my head around Bond killing a few hundred people then calmly sitting at a bar  sipping a cocktail, chatting up some glamorous woman. Seems so unreal.

Maybe I should  not look so deep into them. ::}

I think that's the thing. You have to take it for what it is at the end of the day. It is never going to be a masterpiece, its just James Bond which will always be far fetched and full of cars exploding like they're packed with 500kg of TNT. In reality, he would have been killed 1000 times over by now if it wasn't for that fact he always comes up against people that cant shoot straight in every country he visits. I will always like Bond films because there is nothing else quite like them, but at the same time, I do think it needs freshening up. Spectre was a bit of a let down.

That's a bit unfair.

Consider it being called Bond 26 instead of "spectre", the reality makes it's staleness understandable. Rocky only made it to 5 (or  6 or 7).

I mean with a new Bond.  Craig has already said he couldn't think of anything worse that doing another one. A new Bond always breathes life back into it. I think the principle of Bond films will always remain the same.

That's because he'd just done one, he gets injured doing it and wanted to do something else first... he didn't mean it in the sense of him never wanting to do one. Usual misquoting from the papers.

The staleness comes from being expected to chuck in the usual bond shite like gadgets, bonking every women etc. Stuff like that makes it feel like every other bond. With some good writing and being allowed to perhaps go off bond track a little I think they could come up with something fresh in the spy genre.

Him bonking the bird after her husbands funeral in this one and in the last one when he bonked the chick who had also gone through some shit made me roll my eyes rather than think, oooh good old bond you devil.

Maybe they could do one showing a young Bond in his early days of spying. His training and what made him into such a sociopath.

It could be done in a light hearted way with not so much explosions and killings. To do what he does one would have to turn off feelings of what he does. Losing someone close to him early on to a mad psychopath would explain the way he is. .

The thing is - I miss the sort of humour or self-awareness that I remember from older Bond movies.

The modern-day Bond film is a superficial construct based on a certain amount of given "classic" elements. But using these parts and trying to arrange them in a new order maybe doesn't save new movies in the series from becoming more and more stale. There's no heart, no warmth, no sympathy.

My girlfriend mentioned "Casino Royale" had so much potential, but it was all wasted.

Bond is never really challenged, be it by villains or by chance. Not as much as I can remember from past outings.

The plot nowadays is created so that Bond always gets his way, without having to go through real hardships. Where are the stakes? With every new Bond, the challenges become more and more cringeworthy. So, instead of having Bond face a true challenge, such as a really tough adversary or not being able to use his fancy new sports car for a while - that's when you reveal character - what we get is Bond fighting two people on a helicopter for the best part of five minutes

But the strict intention to have Bond follow a certain pattern renders the moviegoing experience worthless and shallow. Where's the magic, where's the charm?

Jesus, it's only a film!
