Let's have a films thread.

Seems like I'm in the uninterested minority then lol

Ditto... it's just been given film of the year at some big event. Bizarre.

And it has big engines and vehicles and a bit of a unique very fast paced style. I didn't like it that much either but I can see why it has an appeal, especially over and above your usual guns and explosions movie.

From an arty point of view I get it, as a film it's meh.

At the time it came out the internet's amateur film critics were banging on about it being a "visual piece" as if that excluded it from any criticism about the actual content.   Basically the world straight up admitted they don't care about the storyline as long as everything looks cool.

Any Sci Fi fans here? Never been a big one for the genre but need to teach a unit on it soon. Classics? Can anyone suggest a film that hits all key Sci Fi conventions? Cheers!

The Man Who Fell To Earth

They Live!

War Of The Worlds (the 1953 version)

Event Horizon (not for the squeamish, though  :D)

Alien

Blade Runner

Planet Of The Apes

2001: A Space Odyssey

Moon (future in a more realistic, subdued setting)

The Matrix

Back To The Feature

Star Wars (Episodes 4-6)

The Day The Earth Stood Still

Solyaris (the Russian original - food for thought)

Gravity

Tron

Robocop

Akira

Ghost In The Shell

12 Monkeys

Gattaca

The Fifth Element

District 9

Looper

Ex-Machina

The Martian

Prometheus

Primer (a very smart movie, set in a contemporary environment - but you need to stay focused all the time to keep up with the story)

Or if you wanted some personal favourite classics of mine which will be accepted with interest at nerd conventions:

Close Encounters ~ a nice boring safe bet.

Rollerball ~ let's discuss this all night long.

Logans Run ~ you must be the messiah, please may I kiss you as Iv'e never kissed a girl.

Alien or bladerunner might be good starters.

Started watching "The Host" ("Gwoemul") yesterday and it's somewhat entertaining, although bordering on the cheesy for large stretches. The story moves forward rather slowly and the dialogue consists of many repetitious groans and moans.

And before you ask - no, it's not porn. We're talking about a monster flick with a genetically enhanced superfish here. :D

Classic Sci-fi.

Some really good mentions already so some others that could be mentioned.

Metropolis.

King Kong, the original black and white version.

Star Wars a new hope, as it is now called.

Godzilla.

The Terminator.

Invasion of the body snatchers.

The planet of the Apes.

Soylent Green.

Ghost in the Shell.

I'd go for Bladerunner, mate. Thought provoking subject matter, powerful use of cinematography and an ambiguous ending.

Thanks folks appreciate that! Already got Bladerunner and Alien although I won't be able to show the second of those unfortunately! Anyway, very helpful, thank you.
