Leicestershire County Cricket Club

Recommended Posts

Ashley Giles, who started the year as England's limited-overs coach, could end it in charge of the bottom team in county cricket.

ESPNcricinfo understands that Giles, who earlier this week missed out on the Somerset director of cricket job, has emerged as a leading candidate for the coaching position at Leicestershire.

The current power vacuum at the club could see Giles go elsewhere, though. Leicestershire are yet to name a new chief executive - Wasim Khan, a former team-mate of Giles at Warwickshire, remains favourite to land the role - and are understood to be in discussion with their senior coaches, Phil Whitticase and Ben Smith, about their futures. As Leicestershire have failed to win a Championship game since 2012, neither can be brimming with confidence over their job security.

It is also believed that Leicestershire have expressed an interest in bringing Andrew McDonald, the Australian allrounder, back to the club. But until a new chief executive and, perhaps, coach are appointed, it seems unlikely any progress can be made.

Giles has attracted interest from Lancashire, left without a coach when Peter Moores was appointed by England at the start of the season. But with Mike Watkinson already installed as director of cricket and Glen Chapple keen to remain as coach, it is unclear what type of role would be available. Giles also has opportunities within the media.

Former Sussex captain and Surrey coach Chris Adams is also likely to be of interest to Lancashire. A scenario where Chapple remains as player/coach with Adams appointed as his right-hand man is one possibility. Adams fulfilled a similar role for Sri Lanka with some success this summer.

Greg Smith has joined Notts.

We desperately need a coach with substance and standing in the game, someone who can look at the players and say "I've done this". Giles might not be the best player England has ever had but he's won Ashes series, he's won in Sri Lanka, in South Africa and has won trophies as a coach with Warwickshire.

I cant wait for this Giles thing to turn out bollocks and for us to keep the current incompetent lot on and then come bottom again without winning a single match, however having a 'succesful season' next year as we come 4th in the T20 group only a win off qualifying for the quarters.....

Wonder if Notts would take Whitticase with Smith in a 'job lot' !!

Khan and Giles would be exactly what the doctor ordered at the top. Proper cricket people with decent CVs. Mentioned McDonald a while back, would love him here as captain, With those three in position there'd be room for optimism.....

Sadly, I too think the whole article, and related speculation will turn out to be bollox. Could well contest 2015 with a weaker XI than this year.

If that were to happen, I dread to think of the reaction of those in power at Lords !!

Agree with most of your post but due to government working regulations Andrew McDonald cannot be our captain or player due to him not playing enough international cricket over the past few years, which is the reason Clownty had to have Sarwan instead of McDonald 3 seasons ago. He can come back in a non playing capacity though.

With Ashley Giles Naik could rediscover his promise. Otherwise we need an experienced spinner.

We've lost 3 batsmen, one of which was a terrible overseas signing with a back problem and two younger lads reaching maturity with an average of less than 30. Greg Smiths highest first class score was 4 years ago.

We've lost a promising bowler with an injury history but replaced him with an Australian international whose a proven wicket taker.

That leaves Thakor who I think is the only real loss.

It's who we can replace these people with that matters. It's not like we've lost world beaters.

Good to retain Ned if he can re-discover his 2013 form. Sure's up the top order.

So we have now retained our top 3 batsmen in Robson, O'B and Eckersley, losing two who have never hit a 30 run average.

We've lost Buck but replaced him with an Australian international.

Maybe it's not all bad.
