Great signing - recruitment markedly on the up.

As for his language error, most people will have issues with alliteration in their 2nd/3rd languages (assuming they are actually capable of speaking more than one), so we'll let him off that one, I think.

Yeah totally understand, just funny how it sounds 👍🏻

Good to finally get the confirmation.

Arriving in June with another overseas for the start of the season set to be announced in February.

Wonder if that will be a specialist bat for the four day comp as a like for like for Rahane until he arrives. Or whether we'll target a bat for both four day games and the Blast though that would mean rotation between this player and Mulder in the Blast assuming Naveen is fit for all games. Or Mulder not playing t20 which would seem a waste.

Given our shoddy four day batting I hope we prioritise a very solid batter for that format and trust Mulder with Naveen in the Blast.

It's Cameron Bancroft I'm told.

Not bad, I was hoping for someone like Saud Shakheel given Nico’s links with Pakistan/Sindh but maybe not.

Once Rahane is here assuming that our middle order will look something like:

Ackermann

Rahane

Hill

Mulder

From 3 to 6? Looks good.

I'm thinking I'd probably rather see Hill take the gloves so we can have Ahmed at 7 as opposed to Swindells keeping. Thoughts? Not ideal either way.

Evans and Budinger worry me as the opening pair. Evans needs to score more runs and ideally quicker runs as well. Budinger so far looks a white ball player but to give him the benefit remains a bit if an unknown. Welsh has been batting at 4 in Zimbabwe and frankly been poor outside of a solitary ton.

Bancroft early doors would probably help with both scenarios.

Bancroft, Evans, Ackermann, Hill, Mulder, Ahmed, Swindells (wk) 1-7.

That 3-6 looks very good doesn't it, all have the ability to go past the 1,000 run mark.

I think if anything he could end up opening but he finished the season very poorly indeed and I suspect will now be behind Kimber in the pecking order.

Frankly I think Patel, Kimber, Evans, Welch, Budinger, Steel and also Swindells have all at times shown some ability (some have even been very impressive in the past) but pretty much all have also spent periods looking awful, some more than others. There are a couple who can still make excuses regarding injury (Welch) or not long having arrived (Budinger) etc but this season is important for all of them. Kimber has been the best of them in my opinion.

I've left Scriven off as I have a suspicion he's a better batter than all of them and will this season be a better player than Ben Mike was for us now he's fully fit.

If at the end of the season 2 or 3 of them have become dependable batters and we release the others that will be a step forward in my opinion as for significant parts of last season some of these lads werent scoring much at all. Significant questions should be asked of Nico given he seems to have turned Hill into a very good batter whilst the rest look all at sea. But anyway more than 3 would be a bonus. If none of them have then that 3-6 will need to score a lot of runs...

  • 3 weeks later...

Nick Welch with his maiden t20 50 today in Zimbabwe.

Seems to be having an ok time over there with a couple list A 50s, a first class ton and another 50 in addition to the t20 half ton today.

Standard obviously isn't great (look at Ben Comptons first class figures over there this season for an idea) but hopefully he'll at least be rocking up back in England in some sort of form and confidence. I am a bit disappointed he hasn't gone there and stood out as a level above the domestic standard but neither did Eddie Byrom or Kiran Carlson who I rate as decent County players I suppose.

Compton looks decent over here as well though, disapointed his average isn't higher 😂

According to this month's cricketer, we have signed Pakistan opener, Abdullah Shafique, for the first six championship matches.

They also say that Ackerman has turned down new contract offers, he'll be free to discuss offers with other counties from June 1st.

Would Ackermann be a huge loss? I'm unsure, looking at his red ball figures from last year his batting is massively skewed by that 200 odd not out and didn't do much with the ball either. We'll miss him in the T20, and I'd say for the 50 over comp but he's been off at The Hundred anyway hasn't he. Definitely needs a proper replacement though, not like when we didn't re-sign Marcus Harris.

No he doesn't rack up huge numbers, but we would probably need someone coming in with a bit of experience, otherwise the top order looks a bit green.

Difficult to say with Ackermann. I think his batting returns have in general been disappointing over recent seasons. However he was useful in the Blast last season and did rack up that big double ton with Mulder.

Whilst ultimately I still think he's been below what we'd expect I'm still looking at the rest of the batting lineup and not seeing much chance of anyone else contributing those knocks.

As already mentioned the key would be can we find someone better who will hang about for a few seasons.

Would love to know what the plans are, is it complete ground redevelopment? Looks like Loughborough Uni are onboard which will help a lot with the costs. It’ll need a big investor somewhere down the line.
