Although at least people know and acknowledge it's happening now, it was only 5 years ago if you said people on benefits had sky/were out drinking/gambling/had smart phones people had the gall to argue it wasn't happening and you were reading too much of the Daily Mail.

Let's not confuse a perhaps genuine issue with baiting of Ken.

Let's be perfectly honest, nobody on this forum would swap lives with Ken. His life sounds so insanely depressing it's verging on Dickensian.

He's an advert for NOT being on the dole.

Hilarious jokes about him being a scrounger have gone on pretty much long enough by now that surely even MB doesn't get that much of a kick from it.

And this coming from someone so bored of Kentributions that I've blocked him, so it's not like I'm a massive fan.

I wasn't actually trying to bait anyone, I was talking generally about just how many people seem to live a pretty comfortable life whilst living off the state, people I see with my own eyes.

 

Without trying to be personal towards Ken though what does he expect? He's decided to retire before retirement age, it shouldn't be a life of luxury he's living.

For the record I am not on benefits it is a pension which as I have paid up contributions I am entitled to by law.

I receive around £140pw  which is £20 per day which on a 10 hour shift is £2 per hour. What are you on Moose? 10-15 ph? In effect I am stopped over £4 per hour from a minimum wage. If you wish to change incomes I will be happy to oblige.

As I stated in my post I play poker at the lowest stakes. At least allow me some kind of life in my retirement after 45 years of work.I won't be around when you come to retire. Many of the young people on min wage and zero hour contracts may not even have paid enough in to the system in 30-40 years time. It is those I feel for and you should think yourself lucky that for the time being you have a well paid job and your health. I hope for your sake it continues unlike many who have suddenly been faced with a dramitic change in fortunes through illness or redundancy in later life.

£140pw plus your free flat equals about £1k per month for zero hours work. Am I on a better rate than that? No.

The difference is that I do not smoke or drive or have a family/wife to support so I can just about manage. I do not drink 10 pints a night. When I was on JSA I was struggling and would have been broke within a year if I had not found a job or changed to a pension.

I was not talking about myself when pointing out those who were struggling. They are ones having to live on £40 PW after having benefits slashed or having late payment and delays. That is the real world.

I do not have SKY or the latest Iphone either.

I dunno, I'm more dismayed at people feeling entitled to force a fella in his 60's to feel he has to justify collecting a pension after 45 years paying into the pot, having faced redundancy and struggled to find work then has his value system endlessly ridiculed when he volunteers for charitable causes to gain more life-skills to fill his time, make a contribution to his community and better himself.

 

I don't agree with everything Ken says but he's not the one who should feel guilty, ashamed or have to justify his behaviour in this thread.

Thanks. Maybe I should do a Moose and keep my life from the forum a secret. Noone away from the forum that I know has any problem with the way I live my life. I find it strange that some feel envious of those worse off than themselves but would not change places.

Anyway I have things to do rather than waste time on here.

 

How are those on JSA supposed to get jobs when there are people with this attitude towards them about? Maybe he'll find out what it is like at some point in the future.

After 45 years work, mainly manual work in warehouses, as I understand it, Ken is perfectly entitled to live as he does. I wouldn't fancy working longer than that, even at the sort of "white collar" work that I do (and that Matt and Moose do, I assume), never mind warehouse work. My brother is a construction worker in his late 40s and is already feeling the strain of doing physical work. Bodies age and deteriorate, lads - it might even happen to you one day!

 

Also, given the completely fake concern for the public finances used as an excuse for all the baiting (good word, Finn), it's worth pointing out that Ken would probably end up "costing the taxpayer" more if he led the sort of life  you presumably want him to. As I understand it, Ken is single and lives alone. Yet I presume you'd like to see him staying at home alone in sackcloth and ashes, eating gruel, in which case he'd almost certainly end up under NHS treatment for some physical or psychological complaint. Instead, he seems to get out for a bit of company, has a few pints and does some voluntary work to help others. That sounds like a pretty good life-balance in the circumstances. I hope that it makes you happy, Ken. I'm lucky enough that I've only once had an extended period out of work, back in 1983, and back then I always made sure that I got out for a couple of pints a couple of times a week - if you retreat into your shell when you have no paid occupation and are living alone, it can do serious damage.

Nobody is beyond piss-taking on here, but your baiting of Ken on this one issue is pretty fvcking monotonous. Also, I'd have slightly more respect for you if it was a two-way street. Instead, you consistently refuse to reveal anything about yourself, while abusing someone who does reveal information about themselves. How do you spend your time, when you're not on-line? Lurking in bushes throwing stones at passing pensioners? Because that's how you're behaving in the virtual world! Of course, nobody is obliged to reveal personal information, but it's beneath contempt to conceal yourself while baiting and abusing others! While I like Matt on a personal basis (based on 2 encounters), I find some of his contributions pretty sly and dishonest, too, but at least he has the decency to stand in the open and take some piss-taking about his own life when it comes his way. I don't want to fall out with you, as I enjoy our duels over economics, but you need to have a good think, mate.

I can understand why you've blocked Ken (you do harp on about the same things a bit, Ken....as most of us do, to be fair!), but think you should reconsider. Some things he posts are very interesting, things that are easy to miss in a busy life - and things not posted by many others. He can also be very humorous.

 

I've been off the booze for 5 months and 9 days (not a tremble in sight!), but if I was still drinking I'd raise high a foaming glass of ale in toast: "To Ken, to an enjoyable and well-earned retirement, and to less sly bile on FoxesTalk" (Oh! You can throw in the destruction of the Tory Party, if you like!)
