How Was Your Day?

Well, my days have been quite busy recently. My Dad died last week, 19 months after my Mum.

No condolences required, really, as his death feels very different to my Mum's. Whereas she could have enjoyed a few more years (though she was 80), my Dad was 91, in a debilitated condition and only going to get worse.

I was on the point of arranging a hoist for him to be moved between bed and chair as he'd lost the ability to stand in his last week. He'd been at ease with the idea of going for some while. If anything, he'd rather have gone sooner.

He certainly provided some moments of black humour towards the end. More than once, he asked me if I'd organised his funeral yet - and even whether I could arrange for his coffin to be placed in his bedroom for ease of transfer when he went (he always was scrupulously well organised! :D). After his carer had shaved him and combed his hair, he asked "Will the devil take me now, do you think?" lol

Obviously, there have been a few tears and I'll miss greatly the Dad I knew and loved, but he was better off not hanging around any longer. Sadder for us than for him. He'd led a great life, coming from the bogs of the West of Ireland to a nice white-collar career in England, a happy marriage and family, many glasses of good cheer with friends, cycled all over England, France & Spain in the 50s, walking holidays in Greece (climbing Mount Olympus at 70), got a First Class OU degree in his fifties and an Italian A-level in his seventies. At 86, after he'd just been diagnosed with Parkinson's, my Mum had to tell him off for climbing an apple tree to do a bit of pruning.

After he'd died, I Google-searched his name and it took me to a Navy forum. Five years ago, some woman in Scotland had been trying to contact him for her Irish mother, an old girlfriend, as she'd discovered his love letters dating back to 1949, the old goat!

Am currently organising his funeral almost solo, as the day after Dad's death, my brother came off his bike and ended up in hospital (only minor injuries, now discharged, fortunately). Will soon be back to sort you fvckers out, though!

"Enjoy life" is the lesson here, I think!

What a lovely, warm and emotional post. Sorry for your loss Alf.

Thanks for the insight, I'm looking forward to starting, and it will be interesting to see what modules I end up doing, as I'm not 100% sure the areas of Maths I want to pursue the most.

Best of luck with your grad role and whatever option you decide to go with... I quite enjoy the part time job with little responsibility at the moment lol

If its anything like my course, first year is pretty static in terms of options, so you'll have plenty of time to figure out what you like and whats best for you (or who your mates are - sometimes its better doing something where youve got people you get on with alongside you, makes coursework and stuff easier).

Heck, I started off on CompSci, figured I'd prefer Maths so switched early on, then changed my specialism to statistics in 3rd year - so there's absolutely no need to make any decision right now.

Besides, 1st year is more about enjoying Uni than getting super high grades :P

Might take a while.

Get through 10 a day mate and in 45 years you'll of got through them all. Providing you don't receive anymore, of course.

If it helps, I can guarantee 165,000 of them will be penis enlargement or financial offers from Nigerian lawyers.

What did they give you?

I just wrote a list for my Dad who is coming down here for Christmas and then on to CT.

I had to have a booster for diphtheria, tetanus and polio booster cos last one was in 2005 and optional hepatitis B injection which costs but don't have to have it again for life.

We're going Kruger Park as part of our trip so advised to buy malaria tablets closer to the time as well.

Cracked the conieform bone

Oh ....   Do you mean the medial cuneiform (also known as first cuneiform), the largest of the cuneiforms. Situated at the medial side of the foot, anterior to the navicular bone and posterior to the base of the first metatarsal ....    Lateral to the intermediate cuneiform.
