What grinds my gears...

Recommended Posts

When you go to a shop, say an ice cream parlour, and you say to the woman behind the ice cream counter, "a vanilla ice cream please", she then instructs you to pay first, which is fine. But then instead of getting the ice cream ready, while you pay, she waits for you to give her the receipt. All while she is standing next to the cashier.

Why not save everyone time and get the ice cream ready while I pay?

Well it worked for me !!  ....   I know what I'll be drinking tonight .....    not that real ale shite that I normally drink but a pint of Fosters !!!

The power of advertising.

Mind you, if a woman with giant hooters does't come and stand over it, its back to the shite.

Office life is full of absolute muck. I have a breakfast eater next to me who also has lunch and a mid afternoon snack at his desk and I always want to punch him in the face. I mean always, the desire never goes away.

im sure if you asked nicely he'd share some with you :P

Whats with the hate of office breakfast eaters or eating lunch at your desk (if you are swamped etc).

I cant eat breakfast when i first wake up or i will throw it up. I usually eat breakfast about 2 hours after I wake. I get to work early to account for any loss of work time while eating so nobody can whine. Not that i should have to with working overtime without pay. But i do so because i figure someone will complain im eating and not working. Ah hem.

I mean it depends on your work environment too. You cant be eating breakkie whilst serving a customer as thats a bit daft.

As long as you clean up after yourself and keep the kitchen and your work area clean its all good. I can understand the issue with heating up smelly dishes for lunch. Not fun for everyone else.

Hope you same guys never grab a coffee/tea from the free coffee machine at work and make up the time wasted cleaning out your cups and of course coffee machine banter talk.

:)

None of the examples fit your scenario. They were examples of inconsideration or time wasting.

It's easy enough to eat at your desk, yet still be a productive and non-irritating colleague.

Agree on the Halloween thing, awful Americanism that has somehow worked it's way here.

Where I live it's quite good fun now, as the trick or treating is mainly done by small children under parental supervision and the protocol seems to be that they only knock on your door if you've got Halloween decorations on display, and judging by the numbers of pumpkins on folks' doorsteps there's no shortage of willing households.

I'm seldom a fan of Americanisms, but I'm glad we've at last fully embraced their version of Halloween instead of the 1980s version where the children trick or treating were too old and only ever had one outfit - chav.  Also, because it's become such a big deal commercially it cuts down on the period of Christmas bollocks.  It may be Halloween bollocks instead, but variety is the spice of life, and that.

Also, have you had a Halloween Fondant Fancy?  Battleship grey on the outside, green on the inside.  Marvellous

My instinct was/is the same as yours, but apparently it originated on this side of the Atlantic (particularly Scotland/Ireland, but England and elsewhere, too). It's just coming back to us now in a more commercialised form.

When I was a kid, the big event around now was Bonfire Night, but presumably I/we just grew up during the lull, after Halloween had been fading out over here, but before it was re-imported back from America.

The stubborn git in me wants to insist that Bonfire Night should take priority, but my daughter loves Halloween - particularly as an excuse to scrounge/guzzle lots of sweets from neighbours.

Parents of her Christian/Muslim mates ban their kids from taking part on religious grounds, though. Years ago, I was in Mexico during Halloween and saw anti-Halloween protests with placards ("unChristian").

The Mexican "Day of the Dead" is the tradition that I wish we had - a public holiday devoted to remembering / celebrating friends and family who have died.

At the Kings Head they incorporated a rock night into the fancy dress Halloween so it wasn't too bad. Most  there joined in in some way and there were some good outfits. I never was a fan but I made an effort just so I would not be regarded as a miserable old git. Just a mask and an axe from the pound shop. Went well with my black suit and hat.

"Day of the Dead' sounds terrific.

I know I'm being a boring old fart but I really don't get the idea of dressing up like zombies etc and hitting the town, it just looks plain weird.
