What grinds my gears...

It's only relatively recently I realised what was going on.  I was always intrigued, especially at work, why sometimes what are, let's face it, quite easy drinks to make, were sometimes much nicer than others, and sometimes borderline undrinkable.

I had the lightbulb moment (like I'm Einstein or something) when I was wondering why when you make formula for babies it says to never re-boil the water, because I didn't see why that would matter. The reason is apparently, the more you boil water, more and more of the actual water evaporates, leaving behind all the impurities in the water, dissolved minerals and whatnot, and then I realised that that was what you can taste in the minging hot drinks.  It was worst at work as they did this stupid environmentally unfriendly thing where if you made yourself a brew, you were encouraged to use a full kettle even if you weren't making drinks for anyone else, so if someone else turned up wanting a drink there'd be some water left that wasn't cold

Always used to boil fresh water in the office (and still do at home for that matter). People used to think I was weird for it but I can tell every time if the water’s reboiled. Not convinced with the on demand hot water tanks either, they tend to put out water that’s not quite boiling and has probably been boiled multiple times. That said, the ones you can have installed at home are probably much better and by the sounds of it give proper fresh boiling water.

I'm not sure what wizardry they use, but we don't get the reboil taste with the one at work. I'm guessing it's something to do with heating up the water without losing it through steam/evaporation?

Maybe.

I've just filed them under 'I don't know how it works BUT IT DOES'.

Surprised nobody's dismissed my re-boiling/had brew theory as bollocks yet

I don't care if it's safe or not, it makes your brew taste crap and that's literally all that matters, forget pandemics and war and that

I've said it before but "where were you when you were shit" is especially dumb. Literally THE season before we won the league, we were rock bottom of it for six months and still had a full ground. What point do they think they're making? And it's not even like it's triggering or upsetting, we just shrug like "ummm, we were here, watching Richie De Laet lose his man again, where were you?"

Even just reading "where were you when you were shit" makes me hear the potbellied middle aged men that haven't grown up in L1 retorting with "Beating you when you were shit! Aaaahhhh". With all their stone island cladded mates clapping each other on the back going "haha nice one Bazza".

Absolutely shit banter.

More often than tea, yes, but the issues raised affect both beverages, tea probably more so, if anything

Water purity, yes. Water temperature, no.

Those hot water dispensers tend to not distribute at actual boiling temperature and are thus substandard for making tea.

Allow Dave Gorman to rant at you for a moment.

You just know I'm going to buy a cheap thermometer off eBay to test this out, don't you?

If the water is less than boiling then that's proper shit. This thing cost LOADS

Obviously I could just be biased because we (City Council) obviously bought the cheapest ones possible to install in our kitchens. But they aren't great.

In terms of energy efficency they're undoubtedly better than an office full of idiots with a kettle. I loathe the culture of filling it up to full and then switching it on "for the next person." One of my biggest pet hates.

But the heaters are still flawed in other ways.

Hot water dispensers are just shy of boiling for safety reasons I think. Depends on how much you spend on one. The wall mounted ones you get in works canteens are pretty much boiling because they keep water at that temperature constantly.

The home ones heat the water as its needed so are slightly less, but are still plenty hot enough to be steaming and make a hot drink though.

Modern Life Is Goodish was such an enjoyable show.

Hope that Dave Gorman brings it back!

The amount and content of adverts on tv.

on Tuesday my power supply unit died in my pc and until the new one arrives, I’m watching tv, which is something I haven’t done in years.

a 40 odd min show is dragged out into an hours viewing with 1/3 of it bloody adverts. Not only that the adverts are mostly horrific and upsetting. I do get that these charities need money for clean water in Africa or Donkeys abused in Egypt but it’s actually upsetting to watch. If I had the money I would give to the majority of them but I don’t so I have to feel bad for not doing anything and for what? The entertainment of watching the show. 🥲

With you there. When I had sky, if I wanted to watch something there and then I’d pause it and go and do something else for 20 minutes, then fast forward the ads.

We probably even pass on the Championship years, to be honest. Usually in the top 5 average attendances, we even pulled in 24k in 2007/08 and managed 31k on the day we were just about relegated to League One.

The fact we managed around 23k on average during 2004-2008 is remarkable given how dire it was.
