You need to register yourself on the telephone preference service by the sounds of things.

Idiots on here who constantly post long posts to make themselves look more intelligent than they are, or are doing so to try and get people's respect when the post could be summed up in a few words.

Or them who bang on about the same stuff trying to be funny, when they really, are not.

What bookies do you work at? I'm sure sitting in a chair all day taking bets is real hard graft.

Dogs and young children dont mix.

When will people wake up?

Stupid people and young children don't mix, Nothing to do with dogs. It is entirely possible to have a dog and a child safely. That said I do spend a lot of time opening and closing gates.

Done - well needed.

It's worth remembering that only stops the cold callers. If you've ticked a box saying a company can contact you when you signed up for something (or, conversely, not ticked the box to stop them) then they're still allowed to ring you I believe.

Completely agree but I would probably extend that to all pets

Can I ask why?

Its universally agreed amongst Child Psychiatrists that owning pets has loads of benefits for Childrens social and emotional development, can contribute to a child's self-esteem and self-confidence & in the development of forming trusting relationships with other people. Theyre also a good introduction to major life events such as birth, illnesses & bereavements, help to develop responsible behaviour, learn about nature & respect for living things.

Pets provide comfort, physical exercise (depending on the pet of course!) loyalty, affection and companionship.

We always had pets and so have my children and Ive seen nothing but benefits from it. Just because a few reckless chavs decide to get a Pit Bull as a weapon and then feel it acceptable to allow it to mix with their young relatives it doesnt mean all pets are bad for kids. Theyre not.

All it takes is a bit of common sense. I have 2 dogs and a cat and wouldnt leave any of them alone with a small child..... EVER, despite the fact they are all very used to children. Its a no brainer.

It doesnt even stop all of them, if its a foreign place they still get through, we still get them and Ive always made sure I tick the box for no phone calls. I just ask them to hang on and put the phone on the table - let them wait - its no skin off my nose lol

I just don't think pets and young children (up to around 7) mix but after that I think they are a good idea for the reasons listed above (although I would never get another pet because regardless of any promises made from children the burden always falls back on the parent).

Under 7 I don't believe the kids fully realise that a pet is a living thing and the fact that they can seriously hurt a pet or get hurt (from my own experience) by just playing with it. Now, I realise that commomsense is required when getting and raising a pet for the bond to be mutually beneficial but at the end of the day this is animal is a living creature and regardless of how domesticated the pet is, it is still an animal with its own thought processes and reactions and I feel there is always a danger.

Having a pet is a massive responsibility akin (almost) to having a baby and I think people fall in love with the notion of having a pet without thnking about what the reality will be like. (again much like haivng a baby)

Thats a completely different issue to small kids and pets not mixing to be fair.

Only a fool would put the responsibilty of pet care & ownership on a child. As the adult WE take responsibilty for them the same as anything else in the house. Theres nothing wrong with small children having pets with adult supervision. Lets be clear here, no ones suggesting you leave a 4 year old alone with any animal. Theyre still a good thing for all the reasons Ive listed. Id be very concerned at any 5/6 year old didnt realise something was a living thing to be honest but as Uve already saId no child should be left unsupervised.

The reasons most Primary schools have pets are the same as I mentioned. Its all good IMO :)

+1. I was left alone for a matter of minutes as a baby. My mother, horrified, came back to find the cat setting up her bed on my face, with said face turning slightly blue.

Cue jokes about the only pussy I ever got etc :)

Nope, there are many cases of dogs who are well trained well looked after and can change as soon as a baby comes into the picture, for obvious reasons. They are animals and have animal instincts, yes training a dog and treating it well reduces the chances but it doesnt stop it happening.

I must have missed all thes examples of well trained well cared for dogs owned by sensible people who look after their children properly being injured by dogs? Perhaps you have some links to share?

Yeah all the stories I've read over the years have links to them, get real.

Even the site set up to train dogs when babies are introduced to dogs states the same.

But believe what you want, just because you may have experienced no problems, ruling out anyone else not being so lucky is plain stupid.

http://www.saferpets.co.uk/DogSafetyForKids.html

Remember, however, that any dog - regardless of breed, age or type - can bite if they feel threatened and no matter how friendly they normally are, they can never be completely predictable around children. Dogs are animals and will always respond instinctively first, no matter how much training and socialisation has been given.
