Heartbreaking, how can humanity destroy something so beautiful?

I know you won't agree with this but their were comments from a Kenyan politician the other week and he said only way you will stop this is by shooting poachers on sight. It happened in Rhodesia in the 1970's and it pretty came to a halt, it it takes that to stop it then I don't give a shit. Why should people who commit these acts be treated with such respect?

I so want to agree with that, believe me, but I can't given my views on due process. If you catch them, you've got to drag them through the courts and then hand out punishment, more's the pity.

But rest assured though I wouldn't agree with the idea being implemented, I'm not against the principle, because of (as you say) its sheer effectiveness.

For me though the real problem is not the poachers, but the tw@ts that pay them. They're the ones with the true disregard for life - the ones that ask for these animals to be slaughtered just so they can get a nice ornament to show off to their mates or a longer hard-on (wrong, you fvkcing idiots) to show their trophy wives and bits on the side. Honestly. they are beneath contempt IMO.

Agree with the bottom part, but if they can't get the Africans to do it they won't start sending Chinese poachers in and they wouldn't be able to get away with it.

So you either implement something that will stop it or you don't, we'll carry on with courts, trials and pleas to governments along with 'talks' and we'll just have to watch the population become extinct because we valued the rights of a these criminals above that of the wildlife.

Whether you see that as right or wrong only you will have to judge and live with yourself. Personally I'd happliy sacrifice a few poachers being shot to send a message of whats going to happen if you get caught doing this.

It's Africa anyway, they are 500 years behind civilisation and still ran by tribes in a lot of these areas.

Can't disagree with you there - it does appear to be the only real solution, such as it is.

But more needs to be done to go after the 'generals', as it were, as well as the 'foot soldiers'. There needs to be serious penalties for anyone found to be financing poaching of this kind.

Mind you, prosecuting someone who can probably afford a top-notch lawyer and is good at keeping their hands clean would be tricky.

They do a very good job in Rwanda, which contrary to (another) generalisation from Matt isn't 500 years behind civilisation. Although ironically that's partly because of all the investment they got after the genocide so maybe it's not the best example.

Anyway I went to Rwanda this time last year and we took in a trip to see the mountain gorillas. Poaching used to be a huge problem with demand for gorilla products all over the world (think a nice ash tray made out of a gorilla hand). The worst example was where a zoo (I think it was in Belgium) paid poachers to bring them a baby gorilla... in the process of capturing the baby the entire family was killed. Absolutely horrific.

To combat this they started to charge tourists quite a large sum of money to go and see the gorillas. A permit now costs $750 each and for that you get to spend 1 hour with one of the 12 or so families living on the volcanoes in Rwanda. Much of this money is reinvested in the local community to provide local people with another means of making a living that doesn't involve killing gorillas - things like farming, education, etc. By all accounts it works well with poaching now incredibly rare and even some former poachers now working as guides and trackers.

How applicable this is to other species I'm not sure but it shows the problem can be addressed successfully.

How about we create and release into the market a fake Rhino horn aphrodisiac that actually makes your nob rot off, I mean completely off, so it is just a nub? It would only need a few people to lose their cocks to make people think twice about buying rhino horn.

im embarassed to grow up in a generation where people think this is funny. seriously, how stupid do you have to be to think this is acceptable. fvcking dipshits

That is not an apology, that is a statement which says "you are wrong to be offended".

That is more annoying than the bad taste outfits.  Seriously, stupid students is front page news now?

I don't actually blame the poachers much for this - if you're desperate for any kind of money shooting an animal must not seem that bad. The real guilty parties are the uneducated rich Chinese/Arab/Indian/Vietnamese etc pricks who want an ivory handled knife to show off to their mates or for some reason think Viagra isn't good enough, despite powdered rhino horn actually doing fvck all as an aphrodisiac.

We should fvcking stick them in an enclosure and hunt them. Boils my blood every time I see it - senseless, stupid death to fuel some utter tossers vanity.

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/11/10/world/africa/rhino-extinct-species-report/index.html

one way to try and solve it is to do what they did with the buffalo in the US. allow people to own the rhinos, no one owns the rhinos so no one really does anything to protect them.

you could have rhino farms that could sell rhino horn like cattle farmers do with meat. that way the rhinos wont go extinct because it is in the best interest of the rancher to protect and sustain his livestock, the Chinese get their rhino horn and it would help the economy. everyone wins

The politician I referenced (and I'll try and find it when I get home) alluded to this when asked but said the situation was incomparable to any other in Africa due to the range of land that Rhinos cover compared to anything else.

(and that fact it would be 100 times harder to poach a Gorilla than something that can only transport itself on the floor.

Unless you ran into them on the night out and have a legitimate reason to be offended then I don't think you have a right to be offended. I hate people who trawl photos looking to be offended it really is a joke.

I agree, I've been to a few things dressed at a Nazi and I hate it when others take offence on peoples behalf.

Tesco not attempting to light up their car park. It's so dark, cannot see a thing let alone people walking.

The pharmacy dept has not sold enough bandages, anti septic cream  and plasters this year.

Tesco management doesn't miss a trick

I don't normally get involved in the 'daytrippers' and they 'they're only turning up because we're doing well' arguments, e.t.c, but these type of people did my head in yesterday, along with the cadet kids (who some of them quite frankly didn't want to be there and it was clear to see) getting up every 5 minutes (And 5 minutes is generous, it was probably more frequent than that), blocking the aisles because they can't turn up in time for a 3pm KO, or because they are 10 minutes late for the 2nd half, i'm not just talking 1 or 2, it was bleeding hundereds off them.
