What grinds my gears...

The Leicester Mercury and the way they often report, a story this week has really griped me as they have made someone out to be something they really aren't.

Eh, can be a sensible thing to do - for the average bradford driver, a speed limit is a minimum, indicators are some sort of unnecessary extra and they have right of way over the pedestrian crossing infront of them. The amount I've seen that speed up when someone is on a zebra crossing, causing them to have to run across the rest of it, is ridiculous.

It sounds like a red light isn't going to stop your average Bradford driver anyway. I'm not talking 50/50 situations here. I'm talking about a situation where you can see there is definitely nothing coming or is over 100 meters away.

I was hoping at least one person would agree with me here to be honest. Disappointing that FT treats my opinion on this matter with the same disdain as my friends and family.

When it's clear as far as the eye can see, of course pressing the button is stupid, but having said that, don't the buttons do nothing anyway - the lights are on timers and change regardless of whether someone presses the button.

Where the lights are controlling traffic flow e.g. on a junction, maybe (although they may alter the priority if someone pushes the button), but on a pedestrian crossing on a straight bit of road they'll only change if the button is pressed.

There can be a huge lag between the button being pressed and the lights actually changing though.  The lights on the crossing round the corner from me on Hinckley Road can take ages to change - there can be tons of traffic coming from both directions when you press the button, but by the time the green man appears there might just be one car left, which can make you look like a right tool

not all of them. Some lights only turn red if you press the button. I believe the lights on Station road in Glenfield outside the working mens club stay green unless the button is pressed. But obviously lights at major junctions wont change because someone has pressed the button. they change to coincide with the other lights and arent affected by the button.

I can see where he is coming from with crossing the road when there is absolutely nothing coming but surely if you (as a driver) end up having to stop at the light that must mean you werent miles away and they were right to press the button anyway :dunno:

Even if they'd already finished crossing by the time you reach the light?  I can understand that it can be a bit of a compulsion to hit the button, but I'm with filbertway on this - a little bit of situational awareness and common sense goes a long way.

Money for old rope.

This morning I had to go to an "independent" Solicitors/Legal Executive to swear an Oath that the financial details of a Will I'm an Executor for were true and it struck me as a totally antiquated requirement when it also includes me signing a document to say the the same.

I was asked if I wanted to swear on a Bible and explained that I was not religious. I was then asked in a rather casual way whether I believed the documents were truthful and then asked to sign them. The solicitor co-signed and stamped them.

All this took about 5 mins including handing over the £7 (no receipt offered).

Now I can understand my having to put my name to the document but I could see no benefit in having to do it in front of a different solicitor than the one who is processing the will.

Now £7 is not a lot of cash although it's £0.50p more than the minimum wage I just thought it was all so unnecessary and a complete waste of everyone’s time.

like i said i can see where he is coming from but you cant really complain about someone pressing the button even if you are really far away. Thats what its there for. My point was if you are really far away and driving at the speed limit then most likely the light will be turning back to green before you even reach the lights. If the light ends up stopping you then they were right to press the button regardless of whether they were already across or not. If they crossed over and got hit by a car without pressing the button then the pedestrian would be partly to blame.

Put quite simply its better to be safe than sorry. its not as if your journey will be massively affected by stopping at the light for a few seconds is it. This is coming from someone who suffers from road rage but more with other drivers rather than pedestrians.

I'm sorting out my mother's will atm. I thought you could swear your oath at the courthouse? Mind you it costs £215 to apply for probate.

You probably can as long as it's with a registered Legal Executive, I'm sure it'll still cost you and still pointless. i'm leaving it all to the solicitor, the last one I did was totally messed up as  I did some of it and it seemed to be the justification for delays, it took over 8 months and there's was nothing complicated or contentious about it.

Totally agree. Sometimes a thread created about the same player in the same day.

Or loads of crap threads after a defeat as opposed to sticking thoughts into the post match threads.

There's only so many ways you can say 'Wasyl played well but risked being sent off'...

Thirded.

The anti capitalist 'million guy march' last night is starting to look like a parody of itself.

We had Anne Davis, Russell Brand, Vivienne Westwood, Polly Toynbee and Will Self there, at this rate the anarchist march will have more corporate and establishment millionaires than inside the houses of parliament its marching on.

Surely the beliefs of someone who happens to have money has no relevance.

It does if you use the things you campaign against to accumulate your wealth.

Let's be honest, no true socialist should have the personal wealth Westwood does, it's completely against the supposed fairness and equality they are campaigning for.

Nor charge what Westwood does.

Exactly, true socialism demands fair reward for labour not thousands for putting a few zips and rips in a pair of jeans. Champagne socialists are really the worst sort of capitalists.
