What grinds my gears...

My pet hate in arguments is when someone raise their voice, talks over the other person and accuses the other person of being rude when the other person is trying to defend themselves.

An old housemate had this down to a tee.

Sticking with the theme of arguments, I hate it when people use the 'God. You always have to be right, don't you?' line.

By being in an argument, aren't you automatically acknowledging that you each think that your argument is the correct one?

Can't remember anyone arguing that they are in the wrong.

If he was picking sources from the Internet at random, then I agree that's not acceptable. But Google is simply a means of finding what you are looking for more quickly. It's much easier to type some keywords into a search engine than plug in the entire web address. Once Google returns the results, it's pretty easy to tell what is credible and what is not.

Even if it was a credible source imo its still not acceptable as anybody can access that same credible source from there homes or mobile phone. Doctors must surely have the basic knowledge of whats wrong with people from there symptoms and if not then the next step would be to call/refer them to somebody who does know. If a GP doesnt know this would suggest its something a little more serious and a trip to the hospital would be the next step. For me going on google to find the answers is completely unprofessional.

I used to be a mechanical fitter but based on this logic i would be able to get a job as a mechanical engineer because i can go on google and it will tell me the answers.

Anyway it looks like our opinions on this are completely different so there is no point going back and forth.

You may get the answers but wouldn't know how to put them into practice. If the GP found what was wrong using google, he would know what to prescribe. Where as me and you finding answers on google would not.

surely i would just google how to put them into practice or what to prescribe?

I find it baffling that people would actually accept somebody in such a high regarded professional job doing there job off of google. The years of studying to become a doctor should give them the necessary tools to do the job without the use of search engines. If they didnt know then surely the next step would be to refer you to a doctor who specialises in that said area and not go on google in the hope for an answer.

Like i said before. If it was a system within the NHS that was only accessible by doctors then you would accept that, but to use a public search engine where anybody can put whatever they wanted that to me is shocking.

But would you rather have an answer there and then, or get referred and having to wait a week to be seen again?

I worked as a computer engineer in a computer repair shop and I can guarantee you that everyone had to use Google at some point to help diagnose what was wrong with a machine lol

Really? If you would accept your doctors diagnosis based on info from a search engine then fair enough. I would much rather put my health into the hands of somebody who actually knew what they were doing.

I would rather wait a week and get the correct answer than take a risk and follow the instructions of a doctor who has guessed the info he has read is the right one.

You cant actually be serious. Your talking about a machine. Thats fair enough. Im talking about the health of a human being. A bit more important than a machine surely?

If you were to take your child to the doctors would you accept there diagnosis based off a google search? I most certainly wouldn't.

I am sure they have designated sites that they look for. They cannot store everything in their head. Maybe they just double-check the symptoms to see what matches  I would rather be told I had two weeks to live than going back a week later and told I had one week left.

Not good either way though but I'd have more time to enjoy the time left.

The website my doctor looked at was most certainly not a certified website. I sat there and looked at it with him and said are you kidding me.

GP's dont need to store everything in there heads. Thats what specialist doctors are for. GP's learn the basic illnesses and refer you if its something more serious. Not go on google and diagnose it themselves. What if there were multiple reasons for my symptoms? Would people accept the advise of the doctor choosing the one he thinks is the right one. If people want to play around with there health then fair enough.

Or what if the doctor doesn't know exactly but has an idea so uses the Internet to check if what he thinks is logical or if he reads something he then applies his own knowledge to it to see if would be a reasonable explanation, and can then do different checks he does know to confirm or refute that theory.

Using google to diagnose symptoms is just like getting a second opinion. Doctors in this country have to undergo tests and exams every couple of years or so to make sure their knowledge is up to date, they can't know every thing?

How are they meant to refer you to the right specialist if they don't know what is wrong? Without the use of a search engine, they would be guessing even more?

Ive already said if the doctors had an NHS system that is only accessible by doctors then you would accept this. My issue is the use of a public search engine which anybody can access and create websites where there wouldnt be any way of knowing if the website had any credibility. The website he looked at didnt have NHS plastered all over it it looked like some bog standard mickey mouse website that i wasnt prepared to trust my health with.

Surely they would know who to send me to by my symptoms and not the diagnosis. If they didnt then they would send me to A & E where somebody there would actually know what they're doing. Again to use a public search engine with no guarantee the information you're reading is genuine for a second opinion imo isnt acceptable.

But hey each to their own i guess. It's nice to have a healthy (no pun intended) debate about something rather than listening to the constant moaning about Pearson. Im off now for the weekend so wont reply to anymore messages as i only go on FT at work.

The difference between 'anybody' using the search and a doctor is that a doctor may have knowledge of the person writing an article and any errors within it. I am sure some of these sites would be checked by more knowledgeable people in the field and removed if the information can be thought a possible harm to anyone.

Saying that I have used search engines to look up medical conditions. Some that have been mentioned on FT but if I had the condition I would want it confirmed by a doctor. I do have a skin condition known as NF which I have had since birth and little was known about it until a few years ago. I found out after visiting A&E and was told there what it was.

I have tried not to let it hold me back and if anyone asks I tell them what it is. Once a young woman on a bus asked me. It turns out she was a medical student. Young children have pointed and stared but hey that's life you just have to get on with it.

It does seem the in thing nowadays. Some people think its VFM  and a sign of quality if a slice of beef, a lump of mashed potato and a sprig of broccoli is served on a plastic tray. If I had that on a night out I'll be raiding the fridge for bacon and eggs when I got home.
