What grinds my gears...

Recommended Posts

It's the same with footballers, your average league one player is probably on a couple of grand a week, comfortable yes, but not enough to retire on.

Just like footballers then... Yaya Toures million a month isn't the norm.

very very true.

Footballers have always earned more than the working man.

Er, no they haven't.

The bit about the one-armed soldier is brilliant. I'd happily use the blown-off arm to slap the sneering little cvnt who put "Bet 99% of you won't".

Just saw this picture has been shared 250,000 times on Facebook, makes my piss boil

They do a lot more than kill people, in fact I could bet on the vast majority of soldiers never killing anybody.

Out of interest why does it annoy you?

What annoys people is the lack of logic used, to say "soldiers should be paid what footballers are paid" is illogical, to say soldiers should be paid more is fair, but pictures like that are mostly annoying because they are designed to get likes and shares. They're basically using soldiers misfortune for shares.

So you're trying to say the whole British armed forces is a: civilian killing, child raping, murdering, disfiguring force, on the act of a small minority?

Not only are you going on what the papers say but they are going on claims made. Yes some of those stories are shocking and I by no means condone what's happened.

So what are you trying to prove?

That the armed forces aren't heroes who deserve to be put on a pedestal above the whole population.

What about the ones who fought for your country in 2 world wars?  Or the ones who give humanitarian aid to thousands?

Or are you to caught up in your newspaper headlines that you forget these things?

The people who gave their lives two world wars are completely different to the people today fighting imperialistic wars on behalf of the government and huge corporations.

Er, no they haven't.

Yes they have.

Stanley Matthews used to earn £12 at Blackpool in the 1940s. George Best earned £1000 per week in the 1960s.

Much more than the average working man. Footballers always earned more.

For the record, I think footballers and actors/entertainers wages are ****ing disgusting.

Finally someone said it. Why is it always footballers? The "A footballer earns £250,000 a week" was hilarious.

Aren't the main cast in Big Bang Theory now on $1 million an episode? I think Charlie Sheen was on double that when on Two and a Half Men. Personally I think those are two piss-poor sitcoms anyway. No-one moans about that. Obviously I don't feel sorry for footballers because they won't give a shit about these comparisons but it's bizarre.

Pretty sure we're all out of WW1 vets by now aren't we? They've got to be a dying (sorry) breed by now if there's any miraculously still around. Even WWII vets are getting few and far between.

I've the utmost respect for those who were conscripted or volunteered for major world wars in the genuine defence of the realm, sure.

But modern soldiers? **** off, they sign up to travel the world with guns, there's nothing admirable in that. Iraq wasn't a threat to us, Afghanistan wasn't a threat to us. If you want to travel the world giving humanitarian aid then volunteer with an aid organization. You know, the ones who give food and water to the poor kids who've been bombed out of their homes by, uh, western armed forces.

Don't get me wrong, I'd stop considerably short of calling all of our armed forces murderers (although, when you stop and think about it, I do have to look twice at anyone who's actually willing to shoot another person for money) and you'd obviously not find me booing soldiers' funerals or giving them grief. I'd just not be waving flags and singing rule Britannia for them either.

They're professionals, they have a job, they do it. I've got about ten thousand times more love for the emergency / health services than I do soldiers.

At least we're not in America, they are genuinely bat shit crazy about their forces lol.

Well I for one have the utmost respect for our troops, either serving or vets. Whether they have been in action or not, I have plenty members of family and friends that have served and I'm pretty disgusted by some of the comments on here. I'm pretty sure it's born out of some weird inferiority complex but even so, shameful.

With respect, the truly shameful thing about this is that those same decent men and women are being sent to die and be maimed for a cause that is totally, utterly and unequivocally worth neither.

I'm not arguing that, tbh I'm not pro war at all. I'd rather we didn't try to police the world but I think you can argue the politics without disrespecting the people doing the work.

No disrespect to you or your views but, REALLY????

Regardless of whether or not those regimes were a threat to us, do you really believe the men and women who joined the armed forces had any idea that they would be involved in these particular conflicts? Do you think they signed up thinking they might get their legs blown off by an IED but it's gonna be worth it for the money and the glory? You make them all sound like ruthless mercenaries without any thought about anything but themselves.

They, like the men in WW1 and 2, were sent to combat by governments who believed, rightly or wrongly, that they had to defend and ideal. a way of life, a freedom for ourselves and others. Don't blame the soldiers for the reactions of the governments they serve.

Well, they were arguably the two best players in the world in their era. Of course they'd be paid the most.

There are some true heroes out there in the forces, those who have helped rebuilt communities and genuine humanitarians who are worthy or admiration, but can I question your theory that it's born out of 'some weird inferiority complex' though. What is there to feel inferior about exactly? Or is that you simply suspect that those who have questioned the troops feel less of a man because they haven't carried a gun or shot at an enemy?

I have respect for anybody who is brave enough to put their life on the line for whatever the conflict (within reason), that is something that I couldn't even begin to comprehend going through. As with just about everyone, I have past generations of family who have served, and my Grandad wouldn't even talk about it, due to the nature of what he was put through.

As somebody mentioned above though, we are nothing like the Americans. Many of whom seem to almost glorify war, which is completely wrong in my opinion. Yes we don't live in a fairytale world of peace, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't always be doing as much as possible to prevent conflict and the admiration of killing, regardless of circumstance.
