Best thing about Murray being successful is how partisan those who continue to hate him have to become to justify their frankly retarded reasonings for not liking him.

Clearly he doesn't hate the English but if he did then with the shining examples of the dullard English in this thread then I probably wouldn't blame him.

If only the rest of Britain applied the same effort, application and sheer bloody-mindedness then we'd be far more successful at sport and as a nation.

Pretty much this, congratulations Andy, bloody fantastic.

Well.....the 'English' don't win anything..

That's the reason people latch on to Murray, and anything else "British". It's almost as bad as being a glory supporter.

If we had a good English tennis player and he met in the Wimbledon final with Murray, do you really think English/Scottish people would support them equally as 'British'? Or do you think the English/Scottish fans would support the players of their own nationality.

I prefer the Scottish to win over say Germany, because Scotland are out neighbours, and we have a lot in common. But let's not kid ourselves that it's the same as an English win.

That's better than clambering to be called British so you can get a taste of glory IMO.

As for the poster on about the Lions yesterday- I didn't even know they were playing til after it had finished. And I felt more thrilled about finishing my garden yesterday morning than I did hearing they'd won.

I appreciate some people love being British and hate the English/Scottish/Welsh divide.

People also need to understand that there are others who feel the complete opposite.

I've not slagged Murray off whatsoever, I'm pleased he's won but I imagine he's more pleased about winning it for his fellow Jocks than he is for Britain. The same as I'd be ecstatic at winning something for the English even if I was officially representing Britain.

And before anyone tells me I missed out on the Olympics, I really don't feel like I did.

This exactly. I said previously I supported him as a sweaty, as they're our neighbours, not because I'm told we're both British.

what a dull fecker.

Not really. I find all Olympic sports bloody dull. Yes even the football. Full of people jumping on a bandwagon for two weeks, clambering to get a ticket to the Olympic Ping Pong Final despite having no previous interest in Ping Pong, and only interested in the sport for the brief time because the word,' Olympic' appeared at the start of the title.

Well played Murray, thoroughly deserved it. You could see he was going to win from pretty early on IMO. He played like he felt it was his turn and Djok started to look annoyed. I did enjoy him ranting at the umpire lol

I can't say it makes me feel proud to be British at all but it is still a historic moment fro British sport.

But the real hero of the tournament was that cowboy dude in the box. No idea who he was but what a sharp dresser.

One thing that started to get insufferable was the crowd oohing and arring during the points all the while. The stupid old toffs need to chill out and have some respect. It got really embarrassing when they were cheering during rallies just because they were anticipating Murray winning.

I don't watch most tennis but I have to say Wimbledon always entertains me.

But there is no such thing as 'English' in reality.

It is a choice, just look at sport and how many people are only 1/8 of a nationality but they still choose to play for that country.

We are all more British, than English, Welsh, Irish etc...

The Cowboy dude is the head steward. He sits in seat number 7 for every game on Centre.

This discussion should have it's own thread tbh.

Because it's moving away from Tennis.

And all other threads on Foxestalk are well structured, coherent and logical affairs.

Murray has won 18 straight matches on Grass pretty impressive. He also only dropped three sets in the whole tournament quite dominate. Watching the highlights and I still can't breath watching some of these rallies...

But he was in the Wimbledon Semi's so therefore he has to play on Centre Court. Oh and his match against Almagro was on centre court.

He has never won anything...he has been on the main tour a year ffs, a year, and his second major tournament he reached the final. He went from challenger and future events to top 20 in the World in a year, he was struggling money wise and was living in his car sometimes this time last year, and a year later he has reached a Grand Slam Semi.

Enough said.

NO ONE CARES ABOUT JERZY JANCOWICZ

It is an individual sport. That just means it's one Scottish player on the field, instead of 11 of them.

It's not though is it. It's one British player instead of 11 British players

This is what everyone forgets when arguing about this rather pointless national identity issue. At the end of the day you, me or anyone else, whether we prefer to be called English or not, are citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, not England. Scotland is the same country, it's a different state, you don't need your passport to get into it, and it's run from London. Granted a lot of sporting types with poor Geography seem to forgert this because we compete as England Scotland Wales etc in Rugby and Football.

However in most sports, we compete as Great Britain, when we play Tennis in the Davis Cup, we do so as Great Britain, and when Andy Murray competes, he has (GBR) after his name. So not matter what any one thinks or identifies him as, he competes as a British player, he is British, not Scottish. It's not a matter of opinion or how you see him/yourself, it's decided by the ITF.

Plus this is ignoring the obscene amount of money the English Lawn Tennis Association have ploughed into this development and coaching and the fact that he is actually part English himself.

And I believe Djokovic still hasn't won a set against him on grass?

True, although that total is only 5 sets

Stats can throw up some surprises...Rafa the clay court specialist has won 9 sets to Murray's 1 on grass.

Cracking match last night, although I wish the crowd would stop their hysterical squealing during points. Must have been irritating to both players.

Don't particularly care where Murray is from, but I wish he'd lighten up a bit. He seems to have perfected that look of tortured anguish, even when he's winning.

KingFox - serious question, do actually, seriously believe Janowicz will win the us open? When it all kicks off at Flushing Meadows in a couple of months you think he will lift the trophy? Not just hope, not just blind optimism, but that you honestly as a tennis fan pick him above all others as the us open champion?
