My tip is to just start messing about with everything doing trial and error. Then, when you have a basic understanding of some of the simpler stuff go to a torrent site and download a Photoshop e-book, there's loads out there. Just for fun to be honest mate, and it genuinely is fun. Although It'd be interesting to consider a career in this sort of thing, i wouldnt know where to start to be honest. It's something i might look into though. I've done a Howard one aswel - now this one is very basic - i've done this one without any help, just basically figuring out whats what mysef.
