Snow

Recommended Posts

Most of the reason for schools shutting/footy being called off etc is down to the new stupid level of Health and Safety Laws (introduced by God knows which Government) we had worse snow than this when I was a kid and we just got on with it.

The kids arent allowed out at break to play in the snow incase they get injured.

when my brother came over a couple of winters back, we took him to this frozen lake, and despite loads of people walking across it, he was a bit of a pussy and refused, eventually we got him on the ice and the first thing he wanted to do was 'diddymen' :D

made me think about building lethal skid patches across the tennis courts and down the sloping playground at the old block in kibby...

schools here turn the playgrounds into ice rinks and the kids (infants, even) play ice hockey, with skates and everything...

Probably this is why:

Leicester hospital treats 2,500 patients with fractures as big freeze hits.

Doctors and nurses are working overtime to treat a record number of patients with broken bones.

Some 2,500 people with fractures have been treated at Leicester Royal Infirmary in the past two months – almost all victims of slips and falls on ice.

Nurses in the Infirmary's specialist fracture clinic said they would normally see about 20 people who had fallen each month.

Now, many of the staff are working overtime and coming in on days off to help cope with the number of patients.

Leicester City Council said it did not have the staff, or cash to grit all residential footpaths and had concentrated on major shopping areas around the city.

it's no wonder tho, i bet most people in leicester still wear their normal shoes and trainers with flat soles...

speaking of grit, do they still use that awful red salty stuff that melts the snow? i've never understood this as it just melts and turns to ice :dunno:

Charnwood School was closed as was English Martyrs that I know of, or are they classed as County? There were 19 odd by 7.30am but a lot of them were out in places like Coalville

Yes Charnwood!

(Now hoping it's the right Charnwood, which is unlikely)

Anyways to the second bit it depends as certain salts attack steel.

Essex Police have dozens of calls over snowballing

Dozens of calls have been made to police to complain about "anti-social snowballing", Essex Police have said.

The force said it had received more than 100 weather-related calls over 12 hours, between Wednesday morning and evening.

Calls included reports of vehicle accidents and breakdowns but the highest number related to snowballing incidents.

Complaints dropped once darkness fell, Ch Insp Richard Phillibrown said.

Snow helps police catch suspects

Police recovered a computer and a mobile phone after following the tracks

The snow has helped police to catch two suspected car thieves near Bristol after following footprints in the snow.

Officers were called to reports of cars being broken into in the Braemar Avenue area in South Gloucestershire just after midnight on Wednesday.

They followed footprints and bicycle tracks in the snow and found a laptop computer, satellite navigation system and mobile phone in a nearby garden.

Two boys, aged 13 and 15, were arrested and remain in police custody.

Yeah they do use that kind of grit.

and does it still just dissolve and become ice

anyway, it's just light snow here this morning, not going to make any difference really, still too cold (-18) outside to do anything useful...

mind you, the coldest place in norway yesterday was -41... :santa:

Yeah most of the time. But while it's there for the most part, you do get better grip when walking etc...
