All things Mac

Recommended Posts

At the risk of receiving another deluge of death threats and hysterical abuse: if you haven't got a Mac then your penis is small, gay and probably smells.

Shit the bed, I love my Macbook Pro-thing.

When I got the iPhone I thought: shit me, this thing is unlike any gadget I have previously owned. "Shit me, this thing is unlike any gadget I have previously owned" I said to myself. See? I wasn't telling lies.

Aside from locking myself out of it halfway through a parents' evening, it simply continues to get better and better...

Now: Where do I get the free stuff?

I love you, Daggers.

On a techological level.

Tech level is somewhere between ankles and shoulders.

I'm still working out the benefits of Mac over Linux though - beyond the pretty stuff.

But I love pretty stuff.

It's all about Windows baby!

Haha, if this was 10 years ago you might have a point but frankly, that's about as redundant as your pc will be in a years time :D

All hail the Mac :worship:

And welcome to the Mac fraternity Daggers, it's no inner circle but still :welcome:

EDIT: get the macgeekgab podcast, well worth a listen

As I do IT at college, we often talk about PC's obviously but the people that have a Mac say that they are that good they would never have a PC again.

Are they actually good though? Although I'd never get rid of the classic PC I think.

Why would you not get rid of your PC? You can always run Vista/7/Whatever through boot camp (on a dual boot with whatever version of OSX you want) now if you buy an Intel Mac. Frankly, at a very simplistic level, the sheer user friendliness is beyond comparison IMO. The argument about lacking functionality is utter rubbish, and personally I think it's the most stable system I've ever used (been a convert for about 12 years now). Plus, I've never suffered with a virus on a mac :D

I've been using macs for 13 years, I could never go back. If I ever use a pc at work it makes me weep... install driver, virus check this, virus check that, scroll through 8 menus to open the programme you want, computer freezes etc etc etc.

I remember buying the very first imac and then the ipod and wandering around looking at all the fools with their pc's and cd players, I felt like a god amongst men. I don't know one person who has ever gone back to a pc after i've converted them to mac.

I've spent the morning scanning bar codes on things in the house with my iphone. I could have saved a few hundred quid if i'd known about this app.

Was worried when I bought my mac about funcionality etc.

But fuck me its fantastic.

So easy to use.

Bloody beautiful aswell obviously, and fits in nicely with my apple family(Iphone etc).

What's more Dags, is it just keeps getting better, glad you are pleased with it. Convinced Mrs D yet?

She looks at me with the standard 'glance of pity'.

A patronising look reserved for those moments when I want to point out the brilliance of something she has little chance of processing. Things like Macs, iPhone apps, advances in engine design, the difference between types of own brand cereal, the correct way to wash dishes and reasons why graphic novels should be appreciated as proper books.

She didn't even flutter interest at the fact that I downloaded an entire discography in less than 10 minutes last night - something which would have taken me a week in PC-land. Now someone tell me why? Her laptop still retains the same shite download speeds whereas this Mac attains those promised by Virgin. Madness.

But Apple products are so overly expensive for what they are. I don't see the performance justifying the price, and remain to be convinced.

Not exactly like for like though.

I agree with Lisa - I'd be all for getting a Mac if the prices were comparable, but they're not. I bought a Samsung 12.1" laptop a couple of months ago for just over £500, you wouldn't be able to get a Mac for that cheap. You can get cheap laptops nowadays for under £400 which will last you a couple of years. What's the cheapest Mac going to set you back - from a glance at their website it's £749. Not everyone values the quality of a Mac at over £300 more than a similar product - I certainly don't. If Apple want to convert more people from Windows then they need to bring their prices down in my opinion.

I would say that in comparison to pc's they are definitely overpriced but still wouldn't hesitate to spend the extra pounds as from personal experience they just work. It's as simple as that. Im on my second mac now and I think the prices justify their hassle free performance. Im not going to argue with the pc lot as most mac heads I've come across are smug but we all know why we are lol

When I was last in the mac shop highcross it was almost like a meeting of smugness. We all had a glint in our eyes and telepathically were telling each other we were the shit compared to those in pc world.

As to wanting Apple to drop their prices I don't see why they should. It's like asking a Michelin star restaurant to sell their main courses at the same price as an extra value meal in Mcdonalds.

I bought a 1GB Mactel Macbook 4 years ago and it still runs like it did the day I bought it. The fact it cost £150 more than comparable (Windows/linux operated) models is more than compensated by it having a proper shelf life.

lol The people who are confident of never getting a virus on a mac. The number of virus' is rising now, and not as many mac owners have protection software leaving them susceptible. Just a warning is all.

Nope your wrong.

There is only 3 known viruses which are trojans and are used to obtain passwords from bank sites. They don't even mess your computer up. There is a site which offers free software to scan for these.

Virus makers want maximum impact and the fact is there is probably 100 pc users for every 1 mac user means the lack of a market for them.

Shut up and get maximum use from your PC whilst it's virus free :D

Just because I haven't had a virus (in 12 years of using Macs) doesn't mean I don't have AV software on it.

What is this guff about Mac prices?

The spec of my MBP in a Windows-driven piece of kit will command a price well into four-figures - the differential is the only thing worth debating and I believe it's worth three hundred quid extra to ensure a functional system.

It's what you want the thing for too - if your life doesn't stretch beyond MP3s or internet porn then why spend over £250 on something? I got this for 'app' development and (if time permits) some general coding fun.

I could have saved myself a few hundred quid buying something else but I'd have been getting pissed off at every lock-up. My last lappy cost me £1,500 and I lost count of the number of times I had to do a full re-install. Seemed to make no sense to do it all again.
