So I've bought a light fitting to put up, thought it was going to be easy, 3 wires screwed in to the new fitting (pictured below.

But the current fitting has got 2 sets of each wire, also pictured below.

I'm confused!

I have a blank terminal block for 2 wires (blue and brown I'd imagine?)

It says in the instructions that these wires will be 'unswitched live', so does it matter which ones of these wires goes in to the blank terminal block?

And where does the spare earth go?

Can I put BOTH of them in to the new light fitting?

I could really do without blowing up the kitchen.

Is the bottom picture the new light fitting?

Yeah.

I also have this, which must be the blank terminal.

Ok

All the brown wires in the one in hand. (The ones marked loop in, in the middle of original picture.)

The blue with brown sleeving to the red, marked live.

The blue to the blue marked neutral.

All the green and yellows to the middle marked earth.

Bang. 🤪

Yeah that but put the three in the middle in that spare block in your hand in the above photo.

👍🏻

Even though there's only 2 spaces in the spare block?

And am I reading it right that I need 1 brown to go to the new brown and another brown to go to the new blue? :dunno:

Apologies for sounding like an idiot.

Those three browns, to the single spare terminal in your hand.

Got you! Thanks.

And I can put 2 into 1 screw and another in to the second of the spare terminal?

And thanks for the diagram @Free Falling Foxes

If I haven't updated by this time tomorrow, @Parafox I might need that defib :D

Yes mate, I’d probably strip them back long enough to go through both screws and put them all in one end and then do both screws up.

They keep your other lights powered.

Stand down @Parafox I'm still alive!

These fittings aren't even staying there, they'll be in the hall.

But it makes the kitchen look better while me and the Mrs argue over the permanent fittings for in there!

So now I can go home having spent the last 24 hours on standby at the end of your street. And all I had was a Snickers and a flask of tea.

BTW that looks like very old wiring. My nan used to have wires and fittings like that.

What this photo doesn't show is that every other light in the street has gone off lol
