Pretty hard, HTML will only get you so far, you'll need to at least get the basics of CSS and Java and all that lark, I used to be fairly proficient with it but it's all gone out of the window now sadly.

I think this is the site I used: http://www.w3schools.com/

It looks different, used to be grey and monotone but it seemed pretty handy (if that is the same site I'm thinking of)

It's a lot of trial and error too, can drive a man insane web design so stick with it.

Basically this. Learning HTML/PHP/CSS requires time & dedication. w3schools is one of the better websites to learn it from, you can also find books which teach you this stuff, I have this, i've only just started using it but it does seem good so far.

In regards to web hosting/domain names, I recommend http://www.simplexwebs.com/ excellent customer support, good uptime and good prices.

If you do give it a shot then good luck!

If you don't want to learn coding at all there's going to be a limit to what you can achieve but you'll be able to make something simple and fairly aesthetically sound using a bit of software like Dreamweaver. It's windows equivalent, Front Page, used to be streets behind but I haven't used either in about five years.

These will let you build a website in the same way you build a document on Word or a spreadsheet on Excel, just using the physical interface of the program. It'll be constantly converting it in to HTML for you in the background but you'll still be able to edit the code directly.

It's a good starting point. You can make something simple and visually pleasing just by point-and-click and then move on to picking up code, piece by piece, from there. One of the best ways to self teach is just by look at the source code of a website you like the look of, copy and pasting bits in to whatever software you use, and seeing what it does.

As for hosting, just shop around for the cheapest deal you can find. If it's just purely for your recreational use then most other factors aren't really going to be much of an issue, just find something cost effective.

Thing is it's not just the coding, you need to design the site too - which needs something like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.

Most people that can code can't design well and vice versa. Using a program like iWeb means you can use pre-designed templates which you can edit which means you don't really need to be able to design or code.

iWeb is an Apple app for OS X, not a website

edit: not to say you can make an awesome website with it, you can't really, a website is best made by a design agency who specialise in web design, but that's not very helpful for what the OP was asking.

all depends on what you want it for..

simple site to show your friends things or advertise something etc can be done on sites that offer templates etc.

plenty of free hosting for small personal sites like that, same with domains can get free domain names like .tk or .co.cc etc

you can purchase cheap domain names for first year (e.g £1.99 etc ) but after the first year they will go up in price..

if you wanted to try and make something your self as someone mentioned earlier dream weaver or front page are easy ways to learn as they ar WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)

if you are on about a more professorial site (maybe to make money etc) then you should be looking at getting proper help..

Amazing advice thanks , my html skills are none so i will be using one of the template sites you all gave me .

My main aim is to create a site in something im interested in then try and make some money from it , ive got my inspiration from a bloke at work who created a site on his hobby which is coins then used https://www.ebaypartnernetwork.com to make money by linking ebay listings for other peoples items , at one point he was making 14p everytime somebody clicked on a link , hes not rich but has decent bit of pocket money coming in every month and thats just from one site so hes expanding and hes no web genius.

Fair play, it's people like him that eventually hit on an idea and make a bloody fortune.... or end up down the job centre.
