The "do they mean us?" thread

Recommended Posts

Sunderland have a 10 page thread on whether we are on drugs, they really are a strange lot.

Let's be honest; we could have been on LSD and still beaten Sunderland.  :D  :claudio:

Atletico have low possession stats against Espanyol and Celta Vigo. When they won La Liga few years back they were 9th or 10th in the possession table, below some bang average sides in the bottom half.

Case in point, last weekend Atletico beat Betis 5-1 and they only had 50% possession.

I'm sure Atletico get a lot of hate in Spain, but I'm glad they are successful like this.

I made  the point in the Champions league thread (we have one of those now  ), where people are arguing we need to change our style to not embarrass ourselves and have more possession, I cited Atletico  then, less than 50% possession in la liga on average, not just against the big boys.

Possession is meaningless if you do nothing with it, for years under Levein, Kelly, Holloway etc, I would see us try and keep the ball and end up giving it away with a sloppy pass, at least if you give the ball away playing a low percentage ball forwards, there is a chance you will get a goal out of it. If not the ball is far enough away from the goal that we can set the defence and prepare for the attack.

Do they mean us? http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-golden-state-warriors-have-revolutionized-basketball-1459956975

No!

They mean an unfashionable basketball team with no success in recent history, that has gone completely against the norm on how to play the game. They have built a team around specialists and developed a style of play that suits their strengths and exposes opposition weaknesses.  The have utilised unheralded players with specific skills in specific positions that creates low percentage but high reward chances and work on improving those low percentages. They have given their star man the freedom to play as he wants, and in doing so completely disrupt the opposition's defence plans by playing in such an unorthodox way, they have to develop new ways to combat it. This has lead to the NBA title.

They don't mean us, but I couldn't help spot the familiarities, it's also well worth a read.

I know it's in English, but I haven't a clue what they are on about!

Basketball man. It's basically saying how a club has gone completely against the grain and focussed their entire game plan on scoring 3 pointers, low percentage high reward, such as our direct long passing counter attacking style, and has gone on to win the league.

No mention of PEDs or racism though.

And we have a "freak" in Vardy, you can probably add Kante, Mahrez, Huth to the list of "freaks".

4 players who do certain things exceptionally well, they aren't bad at the other disciplines, but whilst other managers would be concerned by their weaknesses, we play to their strengths.

Good article on sky sports about atletico and leicester being the best teams at playing without the ball. Apparently the sides with the top players like keep hold of the ball but that leads to more mistakes, so if you can play without the ball you make less errors and the team that makes less errors wins the game.

Possession means nothing

Last night there was a game between Atletico and Barcelona. Barcelona had 67% possession.

But result was 2:0

I prefer result

Completely agree with you. We got blue collar footballers and play blue collar football. Other fans might genuinely think we're dull but I get joy out of watching us get 6 clean sheets in 7 games knowing full well we were cavalier and steamrolled teams from August til January. I get joy out of seeing us being adaptable and tactically sound.

If we make sensible intelligent signings on the summer I'm quite optimistic about next season.

none of them come close to what curry has done and you've just listed 4 players compared to one.

Stoke vs Tottenham: Ryan Shawcross wants to beat Spurs to help Leicester win the title

For Huth's sake

http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/stoke-vs-tottenham-ryan-shawcross-wants-to-beat-spurs-to-help-leicester-win-the-title-a3225931.html

Always rated Shawcross, and to be honest I wouldn't mind him here, especially with the CL next season we'll need a bigger squad.

Ideally we win Sunday, Stoke beat Spurs and we beat Swansea and finish this of for good!

The best comment I've seen is from months ago when somebody said

'Leicester and Chelsea have done a Space Jam style switch of powers'

Spurs fans are asking the FA to investigate this further

The real "Space Jam" analogy is Claudio Ranieri finding out that Esteban Cambiasso wasn't coming back, and then telling the Leicester squad that they never needed "Michael's Secret Stuff." After all, it was only water, and the players had the talent and the courage to win within themselves the whole time...
