Stay Positive Posted 19 October 2011 Share Posted 19 October 2011 Again, I've been trying to limit myself to the slightly more obscure ones. I almost included The Hold Steady's "Stay Positive" but I've decided that, given that the album reached the top twenty, it's disqualified. Similarly, Drive-By Truckers could have made the list, but various magazines have championed them for years and they've made about 10 albums, so not nearly as "unknown" as I want to post, really. So I've gone with these, and posted what I deem to be a "key track" for each, in case anybody's interested in downloading them): 1) Jetplane Landing - Zero For Conduct (Key track: End Of The Night) 2) Rico - Violent Silences (Key track: Dawn Raid) 3) Brakes - Give Blood (Key track: I Can't Stand To Stand Beside You) 4) The Junket - Lux Safari (Key track: Second On Patrol) 5) Slo-Mo - Slo-Mo (Key track: Girl From Alaska) 6) Elle Milano - Acres Of Dead Space Cadets (Key track: Wonderfully Wonderful (All The Time)) 7) Mama Rosin - Brute Lentement (Key track: le Pistolet) 8) Dan Bern & The IJBC - My Country II - Music To Beat Bush By) (Key track: President) 9) Benjamin Zephaniah - Naked (Key track: Touch) 10) Being 747 - Health & Safety (Key track: DIY Prescriptions) 11) Whole Sky Monitor - Bland Bland Bland (Key track: Sick Sick Sick) 12) Rocket Science - Contact High (Key track: Being Followed)
Houdini Logic Posted 19 October 2011 Share Posted 19 October 2011 Good to see there's still a fan of The Junket around - I have a copy of their unreleased album which they recorded just before splitting up, it's simply incredible...

Good choice with The Martinis. Not sure if Sufjan counts though - that album won a multitude of accolades and rightly so.

But surely not as popular as Blue Aeroplanes or Cud which you put in the 90's section ??
Trav Le Bleu Posted 20 October 2011 Share Posted 20 October 2011 But surely not as popular as Blue Aeroplanes or Cud which you put in the 90's section ?? I thank you. Mention Sufjan Stevens to my mum, my dad, my wife, my uncles, my aunties, my cousins, any of my bro-in-laws, any of my in-laws full stop, all the people I work with except Dave, who has decent taste in music and just "might" know... I'm past the 100 people mark here of people I know and the only ones I know for sure would know who Sufjan Stevens is my brother, our mutual friend Dave and as I said, possibly Dave at work. I'd say that's most people. Of course I could go REALLY obscure... but usually there's a reason those bands are really obscure - the same reasons as the bands that are commercially successful except they didn't market themselves right or don't look so hot. Houdini Logic Posted 20 October 2011 Share Posted 20 October 2011 I've got to say - two fine lists there, and some bands I will need to check out I'm going to keep this one short and off the top of my head, because if I start digging through iTunes then we're all in trouble: Bring Me Your Love - City and Colour (Key Track: Waiting) Danse Macabre - The Faint (Key track: Agenda Suicide) I Sincerely Apologise for All the Trouble I've Caused - David Ford (Key track: State of the Union) Highly Refined Pirates - Minus The Bear (Key Track: Get Me Naked 2: Electric Boogaloo) Pause - Four Tet (Key track: And They All Look Broken Hearted) Domestica - Cursive (Key Track: Making Friends and Acquaintances)
Finchy Posted 20 October 2011 Share Posted 20 October 2011 Gaslight Anthem - Sink Or Swim (Key track - Angry Johnny And The Radio) Gaslight Anthem - Señor And The Queen (EP) (Key track - Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts) Fake Problems - Real Ghosts Caught On Tape (Key track - Songs For Teenagers) The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday (Key track - Stevie Nix) Hot Water Music - Caution (Key track - Trusty Chords) Off With Their Heads - From The Bottom (Key track - I Hope You Know) Osker - Idle Will Kill (Key track - Motionless) The Riot Before - Rebellion (Key track - Uncharted Lands) Titus Andronicus - The Airing Of Grievances (Key track - Titus Andronicus) Gaslight Anthem and The Hold Steady aren't necessarily obscure anymore, but they were when they released those albums. Pretty much all of it sounds the same anyway, I really don't have a varied taste in music. It's all pretty much alternative/punk.

Trav Le Bleu Posted 21 October 2011 Share Posted 21 October 2011 I can't believe I missed Angles by Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobious Pip off my list. Just listened to it in the car and been reminded.

But "Illinois" got a LOT of critical acclaim. I'm not sure Cud ever did, though admittedly they had a few minor hits.
