Safe Standing - Support the Early Day motion

Recommended Posts

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SafeStanding

Do take a few minutes to complete this survey if you can. Run by the Conservative Party so it might just get listened to if we're lucky.

People who don't support Safe Standing need not bother.

PS - Seriously though, if you don't think Safe Standing is a good idea have a read through this thread or have a chat with someone about it. I'm convinced pretty much everyone would support Safe Standing it if they fully understood what was being proposed.

Done. Most effort I have made on a survey :D

For anyone who missed it, the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) released the following statement in response to the Welsh Conservatives' call for a Safe Standing pilot scheme in Wales.

In light of the position taken by the SGSA, we at Union FS have contacted them directly with our own thoughts. You can read our open letter to the SGSA here

Superbly written response as always.

I say progress then you get a completely disgraceful article like this written by Jeff Powell of the Mail that starts linking safe standing with violence and racism. I mean FFS.

GRIMSBY Town have announced their intention to turn a section of the Pontoon Stand into a modern safe-standing area

Following discussions with the Mariners Trust, club bosses have earmarked the far right corner of the famous stand as ideal for a dedicated standing area.

They have now appealed for a local business to sponsor the installation of folding 'rail seats' – commonplace in Germany's Bundesliga – and have offered to rename the area in the firm's honour.

"It's also about trying to embrace modern ways of supporting football clubs and is us responding to a fans' survey carried out by the Mariners Trust, which showed there is an overwhelming desire to see us return to some terraced areas.

"If you don't listen to the fans and try to embrace their ideas, then eventually you end up losing that support.

"We know that there are plenty of firms in the town who would be willing to help create a safe-standing section and we'd really welcome any help they could offer."

As a Conference club, Town are permitted to create a traditional terraced area, however, due to current legislation, any promotion to the Football League would mean that the section could no longer be used – or they would have to revert back.

And that's why the club are looking to install the rail seats and are currently working with North East Lincolnshire Council's Safety Advisory Group and the Sports Ground Safety Authority to become part of a government-backed safe-standing trial, which would allow the club to continue using the area should they win promotion to League Two.

Mr Dale added: "A substantial number of clubs in England alongside the Football Supporters Federation are monitoring the safe standing trials with baited breath

"One thing that is very clear is that supporters are the life blood of every club's continued existence and change is now definitely warranted.

"That's not meant as a criticism of the legislation as this was introduced in the face of extreme and sad circumstances, any return to those dark days in my opinion would be most certainly the wrong way forward.

"However modern stadium seating designs are now demonstrating that there is a way forward that caters for the needs of our supporters whilst not compromising safety."

Check out our full safe standing story – including more thoughts from Nick Dale and Dave Roberts, of the Mariners Trust – at www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk

"Modern seating is not about monetary benefits as the extra capacity created is minimal, it is solely focused supporters, their needs and the atmosphere in the stadium.

"A great atmosphere, together with good results generates support and ultimately pushes the players on."

Dave Roberts, of the Mariners Trust, added: "It's a really positive move and it shows that the club are listening to the fans.

"Supporters have clearly demonstrated that they want some sort of standing area and if we can do this, then it would be fantastic.

"It is achievable. Behind the scenes, we'll be doing lots of work to try and get local support for the project and we hope we can realise it."

If he thinks 'football hooliganism' is on the rise again then one could conclude that all seater stadiums aren't proving much of barrier to it

Does he realise what safe standing is?

Mr Prime Minister, consider yourself warned that the activists are all too aware that moving, shoving crowds have long provided the cover for hooligan rampages.

17/20 PL clubs have shown some sort of public interest in safe standing. Clearly for emotional reasons neither Merseyside club will openly back it so that leaves us, on our own.

Why do we think that is? Some would argue Kevin Barclay but there's photographic evidence of him with a 'legalise safe standing' banner so I'm not sure he's the problem...

Maybe we can bring it up at the FCC meeting on Wednesday?
