Getting new laptop....I don't have a clue!

Recommended Posts

So basically for Christmas i'm buying a new laptop, probably windows 8..

Looking to spend between £450 - £550, anyone know any good ones? Currys/PC World, decent graphics card and a processor?

Not too fussed on graphics card to be honest.

Seen ones with good ram and memory, but I don't know alot about laptops and I don't want to buy a poor one lol

Any recommendations? :)

I'd look at eBuyer. I always get my hardware from eBuyer and they haven't let me down yet. Must be the same with a system. Can't comment about Windows 8, although I never get the latest OS so soon after its released. You'll be able to pick a decent one up between £450 and £550, no doubt. Depending on what you want to use it for though usually defines hardware.

I'll only buy in the shop tbh

Voila, decent looking graphics card and a very good processor... will look on PCworld now but thats a steal.

Edit: Anything with a decent processor & Graphics card is £699...

Just a quick thought, would you consider desktop? more bang for your buck.

I have a very similar one to that with 8GB memory and 750GB Hardrive for £200 less at PC World!

Check out the google chromebook - quite a tidy bit of kit and pretty cheap.

I'd seriously recommend a Dell Inspiron. Mine has an i5 processor and this things an absolute processing monster. Shits all over my previous laptops.

They're reliable, stylish, and can handle multiple applications at once. I can game on this laptop, whilst easily compiling word documents etc. Mine cost £382 from Amazon which was a bargain. I'm not sure it'd be that price now but I'd take a look.

Acer's are fvcking shite, DO NOT buy one. I couldn't even run Skype without other applications such as Google Chrome constantly being slow and forever not responding.

The only problem with my Dell is that the fan is extremely loud sometimes. Normally I'll have my headphones in so it's not really a problem but when I don't it makes one hell of a noise for something that probably shouldn't.

You'll get much, much better deals online than you will in most shops. Like someone else said, you'll get a lot more value for money if you went for a desktop.

Look for a dedicated graphics card for that price, probably 6GB RAM, 500GB+ HDD, and an i5 processor.

I've always considered gaming on a laptop to be a bad idea due to the size of the keys, lack of a mouse (adding a mouse on to your laptop practically doubles the size when you take into account the space needed to move it, unless you're very, very, precise, so you might as well get a desktop.) and size of the screen (tiny, tiny text in some games at higher res.)

Go for an Acer Aspire will be around £500 but you can't go wrong.

mines got 6GB Ram and i3 processor and I use it all day every day, still works like brand new.

Great build, sound, crystal clear screen, quality keypad, card reader, hmdi

this is an absolute bargain at £439 http://www.currys.co...291949-pdt.html

what ever you do don't go for Samsung... and I would stick with Windows 7 for now there will be loads of bugs in 8 over the coming 6 months its the microsoft way!

You won't go far wrong with one of these

Don't buy acer, I've had 2 and they both broke at the screen hinges

Acer shits over most.

I would steer clear of Currys/PC World because they are expensive and have terrible customer service. I got my new PC from PC Specialist and I was impressed with their package. The only downside is the build times can be quite lengthy (about 2 weeks at least) unless you pay for it to be fast tracked.
