ozleicester Posted 5 December 2012 Share Posted 5 December 2012 Hi folks, Just bought a new laptop (nothing special just for webbrowsing etc) This one for $400 (= 240 pounds) in case anyones interested. It comes with Windows 8 and so im now having palpitations... like my migration from xp to vista... grr what a shambles that was...ah the relief that 7 brought. Im perfectly happy with 7 it works well and i understand it, is there anything i should know about 8? any dodgy things any areas that have been a problem for others? also whats the best way to take files and programs across to the new one.. any suggestions appreciated. Fox92 Posted 5 December 2012 Share Posted 5 December 2012 I'm pretty sure there are always dodgy area's when you get a Microsoft operating system straight after it's release. There are often errors and you're having palpitations, which is why I wait for a bit. I found it strange how they released it so soon after seven, and if you're comfortable with seven just stick with that. I avoided Vista, and severn for a while, because I found (and still find) XP so easy to use.
Haydos Posted 5 December 2012 Share Posted 5 December 2012 You could install 7 on it if you've still got the installation disks, pretty straightforward. I'm on 7 and I really like it, don't think i'll be upgrading to 8 from what I've heard. Easiest way RE: file transfer is probably to copy them all over to a USB stick or an external hard drive then copy the back over to the new laptop once it's all set up. VinceNoir Posted 5 December 2012 Share Posted 5 December 2012 I spilled beer in my old MacBook (What a stupid twat) and had to get a new laptop. Couldn't afford a Mac, so got an Acer Ultrabook thingy. Not as good as Mac, but it does the job, plus the hefty Internet connection we have allows me to run football streams flawlessly, which works like a dream when hooking the laptop to the telly. It's a great way to get decent English commentary instead of the bland Danish shite such as John Jensen. Remember him? He's the dick who was shit at Arsenal and still regards himself as a great because of his goal in the final of Euro 92. He pronounces Steven Gerrard's surname in the same way as a Frenchman would pronounce Gerard Houllier's first name.

ozleicester Posted 7 December 2012 Author Share Posted 7 December 2012 Well, got through the hanging problem thanks to slightly lengthy.. delete,..uninstall etc tec (oh and removing that vile Norton from the system). and it is up and away. Thoughts so far... havent noticed any particualr changes in speed etc.... and MSoft are obviously trying to get on the crApple proprietary bandwagon...sign up for this.. sync this...use live etc etc. FVCK off!........ i dont want you to know where i am and which brazilian fart porn sites i have been visiting. I havent figured out how to most smoothly use the crappy app screen... but at least i can use the basics. In the end.. windows 8 looks and feels like a OS for tablets and phones.. that has been thrown onto a laptop.

potter3 Posted 8 December 2012 Share Posted 8 December 2012 You can disable the bit that looks like a touch screen apparently, after that it's just like 7.

Ashley Posted 20 February 2013 Share Posted 20 February 2013 Purchased a new laptop over the weekend and I have to say Windows 8 is dire. I have just downloaded the latest updates and it has deleted IE 10. I can get on the Internet through the app however I don't have it on my desktop when I go to download IE10 off the app I can't see any 'download' button. Why change from the XP/Vista/Windows 7 set up?
lcfc"weasel" Posted 20 February 2013 Share Posted 20 February 2013 It's shit, made for tablets and touchscreens. Should be a desktop version IMO, moved away from something that has worked since at least windows 2000, can't remember whether 98 was the same format as the others or not, but there was no need to change whatsoever. Can understand it's probably good to use on tablets and/or phones, but it's a no go for laptops(without a touch screen) and desktops.

Ashley Posted 20 February 2013 Share Posted 20 February 2013 I have fixed my internet issue now but I still don't like it, was on Google earlier and I came across how to change Windows 8 back to XP/Vista/Windows 7 look, Seriously thinking on doing so. Why change from the XP/Vista/Windows 7 set up? Format before you get too much shit installed/saved. Windows 7 is a great OS and a lot of people seem to be installing that instead, there's really no problem going back to it. I'm certainly not going to be 'upgrading' to 8. stevelcfc Posted 20 February 2013 Share Posted 20 February 2013 I've had it since around November and have got used to it, its just a bit annoying having two desktop screens and having that right hand sidebar which should your mouse go near the corner takes you to something completely different. Langley Posted 20 February 2013 Share Posted 20 February 2013 Updated my pc to windows 8 when I smashed a new drive in. Didn't like it. Downgraded to win7. Can't stand it. Missus has it on hers and loves it. Odd taste in things. Me included. If you bought that laptop, go to pc world and pick up 2 4gb ddr3 sticks of ram(£18) . Whack it in there (takes 5 minutes) and then notice the difference.
ozleicester Posted 21 February 2013 Author Share Posted 21 February 2013 3 months on and im pretty comfortable with it. Its no real improvement on 7 and i stand by the statement that its really designed for tablets and touch screens. I guess its as much about dealing with change, but it does boot faster and the search fuunction in the "metro" sceren is pretty useful. Still anoyed that it takes about 4 different movements to shut down. and it still trying to tie you up like apple does to use MS stuff... but meh, now its just another OS

lcfc"weasel" Posted 21 February 2013 Share Posted 21 February 2013 If you're worried about boot times, shove the OS onto an SSD, you'll notice a bigger difference than you would if you got a better processor.
