RedHux Posted 13 April 2013 Share Posted 13 April 2013 I'm a stove top espresso fan too and rarely drink any other kind of coffee. As the above poster my standard cup would be a lavazza.
Guest Posted 13 April 2013 Share Posted 13 April 2013 I like espresso but I think you can miss the more subtle flavours many single origin coffees excel in.

Zingari Posted 14 April 2013 Share Posted 14 April 2013 What is a "coffee culture"? I think it just means a culture of friends socialising in coffee houses etc rather than pubs and bars. TV series such as Friends , Frazier , Sex in the City etc etc often feature a lot .
Buzzell Posted 14 April 2013 Share Posted 14 April 2013 I used to be a big tea fan until I moved in with my missis at the start of this year. Since I've moved in with her I've been drinking more coffee then tea. Can't beat a good coffee in the morning. Just putting the kettle on

LcFc_Smiv Posted 14 April 2013 Share Posted 14 April 2013 I usually buy Nescafe Gold Blend, don't know how much it costs compared to others I've never really ventured out of my coffee comfort zone. In Texas at the moment and I have some stuff called Folgers, been drinking it for the past six weeks and it does the job, looking forward to that first cup of coffee when I get home though. Texas has a special Pecan coffee from Pecan trees native to Texas. At least try one of those whilst you're there.

They're always in a coffee shop on Friends. What's all this 'don't have milk in your coffee' stuff? Is that just for specific coffees? I have about 1/4 of a cup of milk in mine. Black coffee just dosnae taste right to me.

If you need milk in your coffee - you either don't like the taste of coffee or you've got some crap coffee. Putting milk in your coffee is like putting cordial in your lager when you were a kid or lemonade in you beer. It makes it a different drink (like shandy to Beer). But if that's how you like it fair enough. I'm not being a coffee snob - just drink it how you like it. I take it you don't like expresso either. I only drink that Kenco Colombian one in a jar or Nescaf Gold Blend always with milk and a small drop of honey. That probably sounds horrible to coffee bean lovers but I think it tastes frickin lovely! I have had a couple of coffees that they make in those jugs at train stations, and one at McDonalds but that's it, so am not up on the different types. I don't doubt that there have been coffee shops for a long time, but wondered if the modern craze was down to Friends. I'm sure I never heard a coffee conversation in the mid 90's before Friends, and can't remember ever seeing a coffee shop either! Edit : Just remembered that I have some sort of glass jug contraption with a lid and 'presser' type contraption. Never used it and haven't got a clue what I'm supposed to do with it but am sure it's for coffee.

Never used it and haven't got a clue what I'm supposed to do with it but am sure it's for coffee. It's a French press (or cafétiere or press pot). That's what I use at home. It's simple. Buy ground coffee (if you're in any supermarket you'll have a good choice - perhaps start with Carte Noire) - not instant, boil your kettle. If it's a small pot put a couple of spoons of coffee into the pot (more if you like it strong, less if you like it weak); pour the just boiled water onto the coffee and give it a good stir, put the top on but don't press it down - then wait - again the time depends on your taste - start at a couple of minutes. Slowly press the filter down which separates the grinds then pour yourself a cup - not a mug - just a cup. Add a little sugar or honey if you need it and for you a little milk (though you should try it without and see if you like it). I think that you'll find you like it much more than your nescafe instant. In fact I'm sure you will. Then there should be enough coffee for a second cup. Try it this week and then tell me that I'm this week's hero.

Captain... Posted 15 April 2013 Share Posted 15 April 2013 Never used to drink coffee until I started living in Spain, then I really started to enjoy a nice coffee after a meal, then I came back to the UK, and wondered why they were serving me brown piss, when I was sure I had ordered coffee, started having it for breakfast in a hotel when I was working after a few hanging nights, then it got to the point where I was wreck in the morning and not sleeping at night, and so I stopped, now I don't drink coffee at all over here it tastes like shit. In Spain, my usual brand was BONKA, standard fair, but good stuff made with one of these: They also do good variations, Granizado, which is a slush puppy style coffee, bonbon, which is with condensed milk, nacional, which is with vanilla ice cream, and my favourite, carajillo, which is coffee with heated brandy (or rum), often with heated sugar, and a bit of cinnamon too, sets you up for a night out after a big meal.
