What Game Are You Playing At The Moment ?

Oh fvck no, you in charge of a Rim colony is a terrifying prospect.

Let the war crimes commence.

It is a superb game, its funny actually when @Dahnsouff was talking about a game being impressively done by one dev I was thinking "you should see Rimworld" then oddly enough I scroll down and voila.

I can't remember seeing that much complexity in a sim/management game tbf. Having said that, Dwarf Fortress kinda passed me by originally way-back-when so I don't have thay exactly to compare it to although I know it's basically Rimworld's spiritual predecessor.

You know, I only vaguely knew about Rimworld, and never knew it was a single dev, but reading about this crazy farm @Daggersis making, I need to give it a look!

It is an absolutely insane game. I mean that in multiples different ways.

If you want to find some of the most debauched and criminally insane minds lurking on the Internet then r/rimworld is a good source.

Huge timesink mind.

i cant get in to rim world, i enjoy watching the twitch, the idea is great and seems like my kind of thing but each time i try and play i get bored and give up. im sure if i stuck with it and allowed myself to get invested in the characters stories i would enjoy it, but it takes time to get to that point

What are the point of such games?, i only used to play games which can be completed.  I watch my nephews play games like roblox and have absolutely no idea what's going on or what the point is.

I never need talk to anybody in my family again. If I fit a microwave and toilet into the office, and rig up a pulley system to the window for deliveries, I could possibly avoid ever leaving the room. It’s the perfect game for me.

It's definitely a slow burner to begin with. I mean, that said, it depends which storyteller you have. Randy got no respect for your puny fledgling colony.

But on most settings yeah it's gonna take a couple of hours to build up, just go through the basics, build a simple structure, start getting the survival cycle of cooking etc.

Once you start getting increasingly challenging events and more and more colonists though it's far from slow.

Did you never have Lego or anything? Just building for the fun of it? Expressing your creativity?

That said, whilst Rimworld doesn't have one central story, it is a clever enough organic AI that narratives and stories develop on it. Yes, it's a sandbox but it's a pretty sophisticated one. More so than something like the Sims or Sim City.

Started Rimworld

Chris is dead after being bitten by a mad rat

Lloyd has got an infection whilst building the medical bed

Young has buggered off to shoot rabbits

Is this normal?  :surrender:

lol sort of.

Read up a little bit on assigning work.

It's one thing you're going to need to get your head around and would stop Young going off to shoot rabbits.

Essentially you want to make sure that everyone would drop everything to do the emergency stuff if necessary.

oh it got better after this, the story is over now , but not before one of the guys woke up, giving me faint hope of rescuing the others, only to be charged again by the still angry muffalo, later another woke up, after the animals had calmed down, got 2 into medical beds before passing out in the storeroom and dying. followed by the others.

Ok, several hours later and several restarts later, I am finally getting to grips with this (this may or may not be true) but I was happily being safe and gathering berries to make simple meals, only to find the jolly harmless turkeys near all these berry plants seem to be dying from yet unknown causes, carcasses everywhere.

Trouble ahead it seems…but all 3 of my ladies are in fine spirits and being very productive thus far

edit does hunting ever work? Assume they improve, as currently one of my girls is chasing an Alpaca all over the map and this seems a really bad idea

I’ve been up all night because I don’t have work and I’m married to a sexless relationship and I have a really big lot of gin.

Im going to need to go buy a new box of Kleenex later; this action is hotter than the surface temperature on a rock orbiting far too close to its nearest star.

Chose to go with Forbidden West over Ragnorok of the two games I got with my PS5. Looks stunning so far and I've found the soundtrack in the background really helps set the scene, especially when using a headset (wouldn't normally use one, but it cane with the bundle).

Only just arrived in Chainscrape so very early days I'm assuming, based on the fact I've only just seen the title credits

I think maybe you meant me there rather than Dahnsouff.

Yeah Dwarf Fortress is the biggest influence on games like RimWorld, Minecraft, Factorio, Prison Architecture etc. and most modern sandbox games owe a hell of a lot to Dwarf Fortress. The creators of RimWorld and MineCraft will both happily say as much that it’s by far their biggest influence and they both started trying to make Dwarf Fortress clones before shifting focus a bit.

RimWorld is an amazing game and and it plays differently enough that you can play both side by side, for me I’d have both games in my top 5 games ever. I’d say Dwarf Fortress is still the better game though and definitely the bigger and much more ambitious game though, but RimWorld has its advantages and does some things better.

DwarfFortress is like if you had 100-200 colonists in RimWorld instead of 5-15. The smaller scope allows you to get to know your colonists better in RimWorld though and direct their specialisation more,

Dwarf Fortress is also on about 200 different maps compared to RimWorld’s 1 as it has a similar square sized colony map to RimWorld but also is about digging down into the Earth so it has what are called z-layers where you essentially go up or down a layer of the map despite viewing top down (it’s a bit difficult to explain without showing it) meaning every layer of the map (about 200) which is like viewing it each from another 2m apart from the ones above/below is generated essentially as a separate map.

Dwarf Fortress is also so big that many games will end up grinding to a halt after a decade or so of in game time because there’s just so much stuff in the game and so many millions of calculations going on that even the most high-end of computers can’t handle it any more.

Anyway, back to the real topic, Rimworld…..

So now

  • My boss man got kidnapped investigating a drop
  • My two pets killed each other
  • Second guy got sent to med bed by a ‘mad boar’
  • Third guy killed the ‘mad boar’ but died from blood loss later
  • Man In Black turned up, but he also got attacked by raiding monsters before he had even stayed a night

Back to Animal Crossing seems the only option…

At the risk of getting booed more than Bobby Madley, if you do want to get to grips with the survival basics there is actually no shame in using a non-Randy storyteller and you can make custom scenarios, ie give yourself a kinder start with more materials and components ready to go.

You don't HAVE to dive in as brutal as possible before you've gotten to grips with things lol
