You're easier to spot on a satellite than a plane.

Is it just me or does it feel like the first Chinese plane to fly out of Perth to look for Debris found something, after days of Aussie planes not finding anything.  Strange - maybe the Chinese are keeping info to themselves.

Was it not the Chinese satellite that picked up more recent sightings?

Two weeks and still no plane found... Will it ever...? I can't see this ever coming back. And personally, I don't think it has crashed.

Makes you wonder, how in an age of such technological advancement and refined technology, one plane can just shut off its communications devices and remain undetected.

No satellites, no air traffic control center, no intelligence picking up any signal at all?

I don't think they have anything to gain from keeping other countries in the dark on this one, given the wreckage sightings are nowhere near Chinese territory.

it's in their nature to be secretive .

True, but only when it's in their best interest, and I just don't see the payoff from doing so here.

That's not to say that there might not be an ulterior motive that becomes apparent somewhere down the line though.

One proven bit of wreckage will confirm it crashed and in the southern corridor.  Whether they ever find the flight recorders if a very different matter.  Could take years - it took 2 years to find the Air France plane, and in that case they knew where it hit the water within about 5 mins flying time.  We dont have that here.

Hmm will the black box be found in that location........ There's so many ships heading from one site to another, I hope nobody has an agenda as to where they would want it to be found......

The Southern Ocean currents will have taken any wreckage, if that's what it is, miles from any crash location in the time between the aircraft going missing and the satellite data being reviewed. You can plot a location back from the sighting to the time the aircraft may have crashed but it's going to be fairly imprecise. The blackbox has a radio beacon that will still be transmitting but it'll be in very deep water so you'd need to be pretty close to receive the signal. If it's decided to continue the search in that area the interesting ship involved will be HMS Echo as it's equipped for Oceanographic survey and may well have special gear. Of course, they need to know the debris seen actually comes from the aircraft before they even start and the clocks been running on all this for some time.

MA sent messages to relatives saying that it is assumed beyond all reasonable doubt the plane went down in Southern Ocean with no survivors.

I'm assuming they have some pretty compelling evidence to back this - guessing the press conference will shed some light on that.

Immarsat data and the AAIB say it was in the southern Inidan Ocean.  Debris found floating by RAAF plane.  We have the vicinity of the crash site.A matter o time before the Australian Navy pull something from the water to confirm it absolutely.  Then over to the wind and tide specialists to work out a crash area.

The real good news will be if they manage to recover the flight recorder and can piece together what actually happened to the aircraft. It's not going to be easy and it'll cost a shed load of cash but I suspect Boeing for one are really really going to want evidence. These sort of incidents can lead to spectacular litigation costs and can undermine a manufacturers reputation that can lead to a lot of lost jobs. It's spectacularly sad for those who've lost their lives, and their families but the shockwaves from something like this can ripple a long way.

Am I the only 1 who thinks there was a problem with the plane it changed direction to fly to another runway and crashed into the sea rather than all these terrorist/rogue pilot/worm hole/aliens/conspiracy theories?

Pay attention 007.

It's already been revealed that after studying radar and satellite info they now know that ten minutes after the responder was cut off and the plane changed direction, the co-pilot communicated by radio and said goodnight and mentioned nothing of any problems.

007 solves another missing plane mystery yet again
