Mario Kart 8 has boosted UK Wii U Massively

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/465552/mario-kart-8-boosts-uk-wii-u-hardware-sales-666/

That's pretty good for Nintendo as MK8 is a fantastic game and is boosted Wii U sales. Had a quick go on it at GAME on Friday and was really impressed. Also have seen some Wii U adverts for Mario Kart 8 which can only be a good thing and is obviously helping sales of the system. Reckon Nintendo will have a good E3 and announce some good games for the system hopefully a Mario Strikers U and Metroid game plus a system a price drop. Plus Super Smash Bros 4, Yoshi's Epic Yearn, Zelda, Sonic Boom and Bayonetta 2 are some great Ninty exclusives.

Doesn't look like we're getting Mortal Kombat X :(.

Is it that bad? I know when I touted Watchdogs: Curfew Edition for WiiU in the other thread, not managing to cope with all of those individual npc's on screen was understandable, but to not even manage just two fighters on screen in MK:X?

Calls for a bit of this, aimed at the devs... :P

Perhaps WiiU could petition for a remastered edition of MK:II?

Nintendo posts larger than expected loss despite Mario Kart

_76626758_997745fe-52d4-4ce8-89c1-79b6faNintendo expects its forthcoming Super Smash Bros to help boost sales
Continue reading the main story Nintendo has reported a bigger first-quarter loss than expected, causing its share price to tumble.

The Japanese company posted a 9.9bn yen ($97m; £57m) deficit for the April-to-June months, compared with an 8.6bn yen profit for the same period a year earlier.

Sales were 8% lower, despite the release of a Mario Kart game in May - one of its most popular franchises.

The firm did not alter its prediction of a return to full-year profit.

It sank to a loss in its last financial year.

Nintendo said it expected the release of key titles over the coming months to boost demand before the critical Christmas shopping season.

These include new Super Smash Bros fighting games for its Wii U and 3DS consoles, as well as the action title Hyrule Warriors for the living-room machine and two Pokemon monster-collecting remakes for the handheld device.

Nintendo won praise for the innovative titles it showcased at the recent E3 video games expo in Los Angeles, where it unveiled a new open-world Legends of Zelda title and the paintball arena shooter Splatoon, both due to be released in 2015.

_76626760_c59d3fc0-afe7-4182-8fd9-321e28The new Mario Kart game did not boost sales as much as investors had hoped

But one analyst suggested the releases would come too late.

"They have a relatively good games pipeline, but the big question is about its hardware," said Ed Barton, a games industry analyst at the Ovum consultancy.

"The Wii U is so far behind now, and the perception of the audience that it's a relatively under-powered console compared to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is now pretty firmly cemented.

"Given how inaccurate some of Nintendo's forecasts have been going into their results in terms of hardware and software sales in the past, I'm not optimistic."

Nintendo originally forecast it would sell nine million Wii Us in its last financial year. In May it revealed it had sold only about 2.7 million units despite a price cut.

A further 510,000 Wii Us were sold over the most recent quarter.

Declining reserves

Nintendo did not host a conference call following the earnings release, as it normally does, meaning analysts were unable to quiz executives about the progress of previously announced plans to establish a health division and release new devices for emerging markets.

_76626762_a4017c30-a8de-4fb3-93c1-abd496Nintendo's president had surgery for a "growth" earlier in the year

Its president, Satoru Iwata, had previously cancelled appearances at E3 and the firm's annual shareholders' meeting after doctors found a "growth" in his bile duct, requiring him to have surgery.

He wrote a letter late last month saying he had resumed work "by email and by other means" but was not yet ready to return to his regular schedule.

Documents posted online do, however, offer a couple of other insights:

  • 2.82 million copies of Mario Kart 8 were sold worldwide during the game's first month on release, making it the firm's only "million-seller" during the quarter. In fact, it accounted for more than 60% of all Wii U games sold over the period
  • Nintendo's total assets declined by 6% over the three months, taking them to about $12bn

The news was released after the close of the Japanese markets, but Nintendo stock traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange had fallen about 6% from its opening price by early afternoon.

Nintendo really are falling apart

If it weren't for the Wii's gimmicks shifting a lot of units this would of happened a lot earlier. Their just pretty irrelevant in modern gaming which is a shame as they do still make some good games.

I actually have some sympathy for the Wii U, The Wii wasn't a console I liked at all but the Wii U does seem to have some really interesting exclusives unlike it's other next gen competitors. The themes just don't appeal to the 20-35 age demograph which is where the main market is these days.

Doesn't it just seem so obvious what they need to do? As far as I see it they have 2 options, make a console on a par with the competition in terms of power and architecture, I mean If you can have Fifa, CoD, GTA, Far Cry, all the big hitters basically, on your console as well as Mario, Zelda, Smash, Kart, Donkey Kong etc then the console will shift units, and if it was that powerful the developers would make the games for it, because the console would sell well enough to warrant it. Or they can leave the console space altogether and develop games for other consoles and mobile devices. If there's a Wii U2 or whatever and it's not as powerful as alternatives on the market they're doomed.

Bang on. If nintendo had a machine that was as powerful as the other and had the same games I might pick it over ps

The kids have been hassling me for a Wii but decided to take the plunge and get a Wii U. Arrived yesterday. Pretty impressed so far. Kids love Mario Kart and Mario Bros and I had a blast on Zelda Wind Waker last night, playing on the gamepad whilst the missus watched the TV.

I guess its horses for courses. I still have the PS3 for GTA, Last of Us etc and the Wii for Mario, Zelda and Wii Fit.

wind waker is a class game. Not played it on wii u yet though. Id recommend getting Lego City Undercover. you should be able to pick it up relatively cheap now and its a right laugh.

Yeah, played WW back in the Game Cube days although I don't think I ever finished it. I'll take a look at Lego City. The ability to play games on the gamepad whilst someone else is using the TV is brilliant.

Also got Nintendoland and Wii Party U to try out yet.

Going to give the Wii fit a go as well, in conjunction with cycling to work to try and improve my fitness by a small amount (hopefully)!

Nintendoland is funny my daughter likes playing Mario Chase. theres a ghost mini game on it aswel which is good. The good thing about Lego is you cant die. If you lose all your hearts you just reappear so its great for kids.

Mario 3D looks awesome - might have to pick that up. ZombiU not really my bag but may take a look.

ZombiU can be picked up for around a fiver so it's a no brainer. My missus is a non gamer but she enjoys playing Mario together. Very frustrating though as she's rubbish!
