wifi

Recommended Posts

It worries me how much some people heavily rely on their latest smart phone and social networking.

How did you lot cope 15 years ago when we relied on teletext to find out if you had won a bet or not.

It was embarassing enough seeing Jagielka taking a 'selfie' on the bench against Ecuador. I don't fancy seeing that at our games as well.

Or as others have mentioned fans sitting there staring at their phone rather than watching the match. Id rather have elastic fans over facefook tw@tters

Computers and phones and other technological devices do exist "in the real world" you know. The people who put posts on Facebook or publish articles on websites are real, tangible fleshy humans just like you and me.

Had no idea. Must be fun to live your life through it though.

Me, 27 and have a life outside social networking.

Snap, except slightly younger.

I don't care about wifi as I lose all my bets anyway, it does annoy me though that I can't send or receive a text (either to update my brother or mates/meet up with mates).

Folk on their phones throughout the halfs should be permabanned from the stadium.

You're arguing against a point nobody has made though. Somebody has brought up wifi access at the ground, and in your objections to it you're referencing the idea of "living your life" through technology (whatever that means) as if that's the same has wanting wifi access.

I've already told you that the ground has wifi access already (but as I said I've never found out the password). And you already know that virtually everybody in the ground will have a mobile device, and a significant proportion of them will already be able to connect to the internet without connecting to the wifi at the ground. The same goes for every single ground in the country. Can you honestly say it has made a difference? Do you have any evidence whatsoever for your suppositions? It's the 21st century, get used to people wanting internet access.

Would be interested to know how many people opposed to wifi at the ground are under 40 years old.

21. Firmly a part of the generation who laps it up. Firmly think it would be counter productive to the atmosphere.

Selfie culture is appalling.

I'm 19, and would honestly be disgusted if the club introduced Wifi to the stadium.

Nothing wrong with checking an accumulator at half time, or setting your phone to vibrate in your pocket when there's a goal in another game important to city, but the people who are on Facebook, Twitter, or checking the Champions League scores during the match can fook off.

They already have wifi.

Really don't understand the concerns of some people to be honest, some of you seem to invent this archetypal annoying fan who doesn't watch the game, gets the players' names wrong and leaves after 70 minutes etc (after booing). Thousands of people already have smart phones and other devices with constant internet access that doesn't require wifi at the ground. I've seen aged ST holders who have been coming for decades take several minutes to type out a text to their mate after a goal. All of you saying that wifi access would mean everyone not watching the game, you have literally no evidence that this is true and lots of evidence to say that it is not true. Thousands of people already have internet access at football games.

Ha ha, agree with this. What annoys me is people watching people on their phones lol.

Seriously though I haven't got a clue what's going on around me as I'm concentrating/engrossed in the game.

I know forums do nothing for tone and context but you two really do come across as enormously arrogant and self-satisfied in these posts. "Selfie culture is appalling"? Wtf does that even mean? I hope my concern is ill-founded and you are both taking the piss out of people who do espouse those views.

But if not, prepare to be disgusted because not only is there already wifi at the ground, but also a huge proportion of the attendees of any game will already have a device that allows them to connect to the internet without the need for a wifi connection at the ground. People are already using the internet at games at every ground in the country. What evidence do you have that this makes any difference to anything other than your personal distaste for other people behaving in a way which you don't like?

I want to assume you are joking because it takes an unspeakable level of sanctimony and an unpleasantly high opinion of yourself to offer a list of things you deem to be acceptable or unacceptable uses of electronic devices at football matches. Some people might want to see the scores from other matches, some might want to upload a sutro-filtered picture of themselves or their pie to Facebook, and others might want to get a new high score on 2048. We are well into the 21st century now - get used to people using technology. It advances far faster than professional bores like some of the ones on this forum can hold it back.

I'm glad there isn't wifi because I'd be more inclined to go on my phone during particularly dull games, its not even like I talk to anyone anyway but because it's there I'd probably use it.

You are so touchy on this subject it's unbelievable.

Arrogant? Self satisfied? Because I'd rather we had a crowd that focused on supporting the team rather than checking their accys? I'm not going to pretend it doesn't happen already (I don't live in a cave), I just have an opinion of what I'd rather want. I'm not going to take banners in with anti-phone messages or have a go at people for it, just a general opinion.

The way you go on you'd think you have never judged a single action anyone else has made, ever.

It's all well and good being accepting of those around you but if we really want to improve things then we have to be prepared to criticise others.

We're not going to get anywhere if those who are trying to make things better are attacked for being 'intolerant' because they want things to be done differently.

There are many reasons a decent wifi connection might be useful during a game - checking other scores, work, emails, social media updates, getting info on players etc. If people want to do that during a game they've spent £40 or so to watch, why stop them? If it broadens the appeal of the matchday experience for some then I'm all for it. If my wife drags me shopping, it's some comfort when we are going to a mall with wifi - she would normally be on her phone all the time, but she's more engaged in the shopping experience while I'm connected up to avoid it!

It's part of modern life, like it or not. And if there are perfectly acceptable wifi speeds at large hotels, shopping malls and airports then there should be no problem to put in something serviceable in the KP.

I'm all for having wifi to check scores etc but I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds facebook and twitter a bit crap?

Twitter has it's uses for example checking to see what ridiculous transfer city have been linked with, that's good for a giggle.

However facebook is crap nobody really wants to see status updates from Mary Jane Rottencrotch about her liking the fact she's washing her hair for the 17th time in 2 days. Why you would need to check them during the game is beyond me.

Like I said I'm all for free wifi in the stadium but with a strict filter so you can only access certain sites.

If you want to go on other sites use your 3g/4g

I need wifi to be able to access comedy gold like this post of yours.

I assumed the absurdity of that statement would make its jovial nature obvious, but your humourless response expressed distaste at people "living their lives" through the internet. Nobody is making an argument that "living your life" on the internet (whatever that means) is a good idea. It's very easy to argue against points that nobody else has made, but test yourself a bit more by making a case against things people have actually argued in favour of.

I can see you being the first to bring a robot freind to a game.

Comedy gold again. Yes, after all the internet is neither the product nor the facilitator of human interaction is it. All those accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Foxestalk etc, they're not really created and maintained by people are they? You sound like a proper Luddite mate.

lol

I was responding to the following remarks: "selfie culture is appalling" and "[Doing this thing I agree with] is acceptable but [doing this thing I don't agree with] means you can **** off" - how can these not be taken as condescending and arrogant?

What do you mean "I'd rather we had a crowd that focused on supporting the team rather than checking their accys"? It's a false dichotomy! Most people are au-fait enough with technology not to have to immediately and completely stop what they are doing in order to visit a web page. You've invented a problem; a nightmare scenario in which everybody gawps at their phones without looking at the pitch in order to concentrate exclusively on browsing the internet. This doesn't happen, you're arguing against a fictional event.

Wifi is used for lots of reasons. It's not for other fans to present a list of what they deem to be examples of acceptable internet usage. Get used to the fact that technology is so accessible and humanity is so well connected now that wifi availability is only going to keep increasing exponentially. You can refuse to get on the bandwagon and stand there dismissing it as space-age woo woo or an anti-social obsession, but the bandwagon is going to be speeding off whether you're on it or not. And being a condescending twat about people who take selfies or post on Twitter more often than you find acceptable won't change that.

Friend has 4G and that works fine down there, maybe you cheapskates just need to pay for better phone contracts, or stop using them for a couple of hours a week.

Could you imagine what speeds you'd actually get if there were 30,000 people using the same internet connection!
