As Desmond entered the ballroom the first thing that struck him was the smell.  The unmistakable sour cloud that comes with death, the relentlessness it possesses and the way in which it takes over all of your senses.

 

His forearm covering is face, he took a step forward and then he saw them. 16 of them in total, all male, all wearing what could once be classed as suits; and all once seemingly part of the jovial camaraderie that is the norm at such functions. 

 

Nothing moved other than the thin clouds of smoke which danced hypnotically from the bodies, Desmond stood stock still and listened. He had seen some terrible things over the years, but nothing quite as brutal as what lay before him now. The sheer number of dead, the blood, the dead silence.

 

"Looking for me"

 

The voice cut through the silence like a knife, the words taking the wind out of him. 

 

He didn't need to look, he didn't want to look, he knew.

 

He turned anyway.
