What on the roads has annoyed you today?

Years ago I went to fatal collision on Beggars Lane due to both cars being over the centre of the road and hitting each other head on. It's really not the sort of road where you can get up to any significant speed but still, one person died as a result.

Its a dodgy road imo.

The road width adds to the danger as its not consistent. Some parts wider than others. It is possible to get to a fair speed on it - albeit not ideal to do so.

The problem is that its seen as a cut through route? People just want to go faster than normal?

Agree with this, I was having one of those "money no object" whines to the other half whilst driving on it the other day, saying that it needs significant investment to gobble up as much land around it to widen it. Can't do much about the farm entries near the Next side, but for the amount of cars that use it it really should be more functional as a road.

It seems to serve LFE, New Lubbesthorpe, Kirby Muxloe at the least and is a rat run when the traffic is heavy on the other major routes. I don't think it's ever not occupied.

It'll never happen and I'll moan about it and still drive on it lol, but it definitely is a bit dodge.

The best one was the old lubbesthorpe bridle road....  you could motor down there but would have to hit the horn on the blind s bend to let others know you were coming (at a safe speed by then...)

You could also cut thru from that road onto road by the enderby park and ride

Strewth! How times change. I remember Beggars Lane as an almost country road. I could drive, even cycle along it and not see another vehicle.

Desford Lane leaving Kirby. Hear a horn behind me and see a van overtake a car.

Next thing the van is about to ram me (I am not going slow). Literally mm from my car and I'm doing 50mph. And staying there, trying to force me to go quicker.

So i let go of the gas and let the car slow to 30mph. A few bends, traffic coming opposite way 🤷‍♂️.

I need to turn right. I have time to do so. But I don't. 🤷‍♂️.

The pie and key then decided to drive on the grass verge to get around me.

Middleton Street by any chance? It pisses me right off especially people with 4x4s, why have a big vehicle that is wide enough to still be touching the tarmac and decide to crawl over them. If you line yourself up properly you can at least do 20 over most spend humps no matter what vehicle.

Nah around where I live but I see it all over the place

Driving along the lane near Groby that goes next to Groby Pool, quite a few difficult bends where you need to have the correct speed and position to negotiate them and a delivery van comes round one bend at speed and is half on my side of the road forcing me to brake and swerve into the verge. I've encountered many of them and I'm getting really pissed off with these drivers. Inconsiderate, unprofessional and aggressive.

Hopefully you’re never stuck behind me then! My splitter doesn’t stand a chance going over them at more than 5mph. The ones on Tudor Road are horrendous.

Why can't the County Council sort out the flooding on Slash Lane, Barrow?

I’m amazed. I used to live near to there and used Slash Lane several times a week. I had to pay a load of kids once to push my car clear of the water and that was in the 80s… I’m sure the council were discussing improvements even then.

The absolute whopper on the 607 between Melton and the A46 yesterday. It was dark (about 6pm) and they were doing about 50 but touching the brake every single time a car came in the opposite direction, or whenever there was a bend. Brake light flashed up so often it was a joke.

That road is not narrow and it's not one to fear. Astonishing lack of driving confidence.

I've noticed this a lot, drivers continually dabbing their brakes and braking unnecessarily - particularly in the middle of a corner or in a straight line on motorways instead of simply regulating their speed with the throttle and engine braking.

EDIT: Horrible to drive behind.

I'm not that familiar with it but haven't loads of people been killed on that road over the years?

Er…

Isn’t this the whole point of speed bumps??

It is, but going ridiculously slow unless you have a car that is so low to the ground, is unnecessary and frustrating for following drivers. Speed bumps, in particular the individual blocks on each side of the road, were designed, in general, to be safely negotiated at around 20mph. As previously mentioned, 4x4's and MPV's generally can go over them without having to slow at all. Yet they still do.

I used to have lowered cars, but not to the point I had to slow to 5mph to get over the speed bumps.

Now if I'm stuck behind a boy racer with a lowered car and stupid looking body kit that he doesn't want to rip off, and has to slow right down, it just winds me up.

Advanced driving teaches you a different style of driving. Never "steer and gear" i.e. don't change gear whilst attempting a cornering manoeuvre; identify the hazard then get the speed right for the hazard you're about to negotiate then get the correct gear for the correct speed, which is the example I think you were making.

Among other methods of driving defensively and safely.

@Parafox you've obviously had so much experience on the road and it's always interesting to hear your thoughts.

Take for example those speed bumps that are like a brick wall in the middle of the road, which are still about, how did you negotiate them as an ambulance driver?

Did they piss you off?

You see them less nowadays, but I'm talking like the old ones that used to be at Meridian, outside the cinema.

You would see them on some public roads too. There's some in Upton, Northampton and in a standard BMW 118, I have to take them at under 10mph.

I bet you could tell some stories!
