The defensive midfielder arrived at the Walkers Stadium with his best years very much behind him. He actually finished his career with a 14-game loan stint with the Foxes, signed from Kaiserslautern in February 2004 with the aim of helping City to Premier League survival.
He came with a big reputation, having won a large number of trophies during his time with Borussia Dortmund, during a golden era for the German club. He was also a German international and had played for Schalke before his move to Dortmund, and then on toe Tottenham Hotspur after for his first taste of English top-flight football.
He actually played for Spurs against City in the League Cup final of 1999 but didn't endear himself to the Foxes faithful with his attempts, seemingly, to get Robbie Savage sent-off throughout. That said the German didn't disgrace himself in his brief stint with City, despite it being at the end of his career.
After calling time on his playing days, Freund was assistant manager to fellow German Berti Vogts with the Nigerian national team before returning to coach in his homeland.
