The outside-left arrived at Fosse with a good reputation in 1894, having impressed with Preston North End and Sheffield United before making the switch.
A Scot, he played for Celtic early on but his performances were limited. Still, whatever Preston saw of him was enough. He arrived south of the border in 1890 and top-scored in his first season there before being an ever-present the following term. A move to Bramall Lane followed and he worked his magic there, helping the Blades to promotion.
He was a regular with Fosse on the left flank, making his debut in September 1894 in a home game against Rotherham Town. Two years on he lost his place, however, when Billy Dorrell returned to the club from Aston Villa.
He began to suffer weight problems later in his career, something that had an impact on his football, but he did go on to enjoy relatively decent success with Rossendale United, Nelson and New Brompton in his latter years.
