Leicester-born Howes was a goalkeeper who had two spells with his hometown club. The first came in 1896 after catching the eye with his performances at Leicester Waverley and the second two years later and just two months after his release from the club and after a trial with Lincoln City and full move to Reading.
He pulled on the gloves for the majority of his matches for the Foxes in his first spell, but his final match did see him help City to victory - and the top of the Second Division table for the first time ever in the club's history.
Howes moved to Brighton United after being deemed surplus to requirements with City and travelled north of the border to Dundee before moving south again, this time for a second spell in Brighton with Brighton and Hove Albion.
