Jock Wallace aided Hamill's rise from low-level Scottish football when he brought him to Filbert Street in September 1980, making him part of a young-looking City side.
The Glaswegian midfielder played a bit-part in his first season at the club and got the nod to feature in two of City's first three games of the following campaign, scoring the winner in both games but failing to win selection again.
It prompted a move on-loan to Scunthorpe United and then permanent switches to non-league with Kettering Town and Nuneaton Borough. He followed Nuneaton boss Graham Carr back into league football with Northampton Town and also played with Scarborough and Boston United.
Hamill also had a brief playing stint overseas with Swedish club IFK Mariehamn before his move to Scarborough.
