Lane arrived at City as a promising young centre-forward after making strides forward for a couple of seasons with Tottenham Hotspur but he spent a frustrating few seasons at Filbert Street, making his five appearances in the Football League and scoring two goals.
He couldn’t dislodge Arthur Chandler from a starting role and in all five matches he played in he was never on a winning City side. Reading gave him another chance high up in the leagues but his struggles in front of goal and in terms of appearances continued.
Those spells saw Lane drop down the divisions and he found his level with regular outings, and goals, for clubs including Brentford, Watford, Bristol City and Clapton Orient.
